Derek Kerstetter Scouting Report

Derek is not to be bet against with the skills set to line up at guard or tackle. Could develop into a solid backup and eventual starter in the NFL. He finishes and doesn't quit; competitor with a positive attitude and leadership traits that coaches admire. His awareness is above-average for his limited experience. Sells trap block and can turn to seal. Fluid getting to and adjust at the second level.

Derek is a feisty, tough and plays with a competitive attitude. He is fundamentally sound and understands blocking angles, using body positioning to his advantage. Disciplined awareness and good intelligence.

Areas for Improvement

Kerstetter lacks lateral agility, flexibility and footwork to start on the outside in the NFL. He is susceptible to speed rushers. Has only average quickness off the snap and doesn't possess the acceleration or arm length to corral defenders once they cross his face. He is not explosive in any aspect. Lacks the quickness to redirect and handle cut blocks. Unable to complete most combo blocks. Gets an initial shove at the line but doesn't move the second target. Poor body control and lacks accuracy blocking on the move.

Kerstetter drops his head too often on contact, which causes problems against swim moves. He limits ability to mirror by leaning forward with his upper body and neglecting his lower body. Not strong enough and remains rough around the edges.

Derek Kerstetter Career at School

Kerstetter is a fifth-year offensive lineman who has played in 58 games with 49 starts. Derek was a 2021 third-team All-Big 12 Preseason selection by Phil Steele and earned All-Big 12 honorable mention in 2020. He was a preseason watch list candidate for the 2020 Rimington Trophy and recognized as a third-team performer on Pro Football Focus’ 2019 Big 12 Team of the Year. He was a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection (2019-21) and made his collegiate debut at Iowa State in 2017.
