Derrick has good build with long arms. He is a natural pass catcher. He maximizes catching range and is comfortable extending away from his body to pull down the football. He flashes good blocking ability with legit play strength to block defensive ends from in line positions. He plays with balance and can sustain once latche on.

Derrick has above average body control with his route running. He flashes ability to stay tight on his route breaks. He will lean and use body to create leverage. He has above average long speed. He has the build up speed and can get vertical.

Deese Jr. has only average size and strength. He lacks an imposing frame. He has average size and power for the position. He won't overwhelm with his strength. He is an effort blocker who gets in the way more than he mauls. He does not break many tackles or do enough after contact. He lacks elite power for the position and looks maxed out from a strength perspective.

In his fourth season with the Spartans, Derrick Deese Jr. a long lanky tight end started 11 games out of 22 total games played. He first joined the team for 2018 fall drills as a tight end prospect. He was named to the 2019 and 2020 Mountain West All Academic team. Derrick earned his bachelor's degree in 2021 as a communication studies major. He enrolled in the San José State University master's program in interdisciplinary studies. With an extra year of eligibility he took the field for the Spartans in 2021.

For his career at the collegiate level, Derrick recorded 86 receptions for 1,149 yards and 11 touchdowns. For his total production the best year was his graduate year where he registered 47 receptions for 730 yards and 4 touchdowns in five games.

Derrick Deese Jr. is a long tight end who aligned in-line and split out in the formation during college. He flashes good play strength and is a legit blocker of edge defenders on run plays. Deese has enough athleticism to bend and gain leverage and pull on counter run plays and can also use his good length and balance to sustain his blocks.

Deese projects as a true Y TE at the NFL level. He is a natural catcher of the football with a wide catching range at all angles. And has the play strength to stay as an in-line player on first and second down. Deese has body control and enough athleticism to be a legitimate option as a receiver but will need to refine his route-running ability to become a player offensive coordinators design concepts for. He flashes the ability to be a true ball winner in the red zone and will not have to be hidden in the run game at all.
