Devin Smith Scouting Report

Smith makes excellent use of his hands and is able to take advantage of his power, in order to win the leverage battle inside the trenches. A developmental player with upside, Smith hails from NFL lineage, as he is the nephew of the great, late Will Smith (New Orleans Saints). His versatility could allow him to play numerous positions at the next level, depending on scheme but is primarily considered an edge-rusher who could play with his hand in the dirt, or possibly even stand up at the next level.

Areas for Improvement

Smith has average size, strength and lacks the bulk in his upper and lower body to hold up on the line. He is not a sudden athlete. Has very ordinary flexibility and fluidity. He is not overly explosive and lacks the speed to threaten the edge. He plays upright with limited power to disengage _and is not overpowering in any aspect.

Devin plays tall, lacks athleticism to break down against elusive ballcarriers. Has limited athleticism and range. Lacks natural explosion or first-step burst to consistently threaten the edge. He misses tackles, even when he gets his hands on the ballcarrier. He needs to improve hand placement and technique.

Devin Smith Career at School

Devin Smith graduated from Utica-Notre Dame in 2017, a three-year starter in football and a two-time all-league and All-CNY selection. Devin was a four-year starter in lacross and two-time second team all-league. He was also a member of the bowling team. As a true freshman, Devin saw the field in seven games with one start registering 12 tackles, 8 solor with 2.5 tackles for loss. He also recorded 1.5 sacks, one fumble recovery and two quarterback hurries with one pass break up.

In 2018, Devin played in all 10 games with three starts. He accounted for 15 tackles, five solo, 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack and seven quarterback hurries. Smith earned first team All Empire 8 honors in 2019. He started all 11 games, registering 53 tackles, 23 solo. He tied for the team lead with 12 tackles for loss. He led the team with seven sacks and three forced fumbles. He added 19 quarterback hurries and two pass breakups.

The 2020 season was cancelled due to the covid-19 pandemic. In 2021, Devin totaled 46 tackles with 22 solo and 7 tackles for loss with 6.5 sacks. Smith pressured the quarterback with a whopping 27 quarterback hurries. He also recorded three forced fumbles and three pass breakups.
