Esiason hints at Bill Cowher Jets interest: ‘Really attractive’

Does Boomer Esiason know something everyone else doesn’t? Could Bill Cowher, the retired longtime Steelers coach be interested in the Jets job when it opens?

During his morning show on WFAN, Esiason, who works with Cowher on CBS’ “The NFL Today” show, made it sound like Cowher might have at least a little interest.

He was discussing the disaster that is the Jets with “Boomer And Gio” co-host Gregg Giannotti, when Giannotti said Cowher would be perfect, but would never happen.

“Really? What do you mean it’s never going to happen?” Boomer asked.

“All I know is that yesterday, he was showing me and Nate [Burleson] film of him coaching on the sideline where he was mic’ed up, and we looked at each other like, ‘hmm, what does that mean?’ Is he sending a message? I’ve worked with him for 14 years and I’ve never seen that.”

The Jets’ head coaching position is almost assuredly a lock to be open after the 2020 season ends. The current titleholder, Adam Gase, is mired in an 0-12 season with little player progress to show for his two years with the team.

Esiason went on to say that Cowher is a “really fit 63 years old.”


“He was saying to me yesterday, he’s the one that told me the Jets job is going to be really attractive, and they could hire whomever they want,” Esiason said, “and he told me he loves Joe Douglas.”

Esiason said Cowher’s wife is a big Jets fan, one who even refers to them as “we.” Cowher hasn’t coached since 2006. He would be a splash hire.

At this point I don't know who I would want to see takeover for Gase. All I know is he wasn't the answer in Miami and he has done an even worse job with us, so time to move on.

Would be nice to get an innovative mind that can influence both sides of the ball.

I agree with you, except I'm not sure these younger kids respond to yelling the way guys used to. millenials are different and not for the better in my opinion

but given the choice of anyone else out there it would be worth a try

This is what we need it all comes down to who we pick. There are guys out there that want to win.... maybe over a few more talented guys. We need to find them. The interview is as telling as the film & what you see on the field. Budda Baker on the Cards along with Fitz that you really want. This coach if he comes will find these guys. Now P. P. on the Cards I would get rid of him ASAP. He has lost inside what ever he had. I think Williams on the Jets is that type of guy too. I bet he would love to get Cowher as our coach.

They are used to Williams yelling at them so what's the dif ? Cower might be rusty after 11 years of analyzing, and he might not, but he has great people skills and something Gase does not have, brains and common sense. It could go either way, but would in my opinion, be worth the gamble because he would hire competent younger guys to run the offense and defense and oversee them to make sure everyone is on the same page. He hasn't really been out of football to the extent that he has missed the fact that things have changed. He sees that very clearly I believe as an analist. Another thing to consider is that if he came here there is a high possibility that Juju Smith Shuster would follow and that wouldn't be the worst thing to happen. Yep, I'd give Cower a shot in a heartbeat. Nobody could possibly be worse than Gase.
