Fred Peters Scouting Report

Fred Peters is tough and scrappy with forceful nature to be physical at all levels of the field. He has good bulk on his frame to be aggressive in run support. He has a physical mentality. He is strong enough to redirect receivers at the line and camouflage his average speed. He takes accurate angles to the ballcarrier.

Fred is a strong, aggressive tackler and does nto back down against the run. He is versatile with experience as an in the box safety and in man coverage. He closes to the ball quite well and possesses the hands to snatch throws away from his frame. He is aware in the red zone, stays on the back line to take away fade throws. He is capable of making quarterbacks pay for late throws.

Fred has good football awaresness to read and react quickly. He is capable of staying balanced and patience in space. He plays with superb discipline. He possesses good straight line speed, fluid hips to turn and run. His is explosive out of his breaks. He plays with good vision and anticipation in the secondary.

Fred has good body control and balance to redirect. He shows good awareness, following the eyes of the quarterback. He breaks on the ball with excellent quickness and aggression. He is patient and flexible in his drops and looks natural in space. He is aggressive with an active playing style to work through on action. He does not back down against the run.

Areas for Improvement

Peters needs to get stroner. He is easily lost in the trash. He is not a sudden athlete and shows body stiffness when attempting to quickly redirect. He is not fully consistent on making the interception in front of receivers. He is best suited off the line of scrimmage due to a high, stiff backpedal. He only has average long speed and body flexibility.

Peters will slip off tackles and needs to finish more consistently. He is inconsistent getting off of blocks. He can be a step slow to react when a quarterback comes back to his side of the field late in progression. Fred needs to show better tackling technique to consistently finish.

Fred Peters Career at Mississippi State

Peters spent his freshman and sophomore seasons at Jones County Community College. While there he accounted for 115 tackles, seven tackles-for-losses and three pass breakups. He was also able to force turnovers in a way that made it look easy-- Peters caught three interceptions and forced two fumbles during his two years with the program.

Coming out of junior college, Peters was one of the most sought-after defenders in the south. Rivals listed him as a four-star prospect, while 247Sports named him the No. 4 overall JUCO safety and No. 5 JUCO recruit in the state of Mississippi. Peters also picked up many accolades for the work he did at his smaller school, including the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior College South Division Most-Valuable Defensive Back and the All-MACJC South Division first-team.

Once joining the large SEC program, Peters had his work cut out for him. As expected, he was able to keep up juts fine. His 2019 junior season was sort of a learning year for Peters, and although he played in all 13 games, he totaled 10 tackles, three tackles-for-losses, and one interception. He made his first career start in 2020, along with many newer members of the squad, and finished the year with four starts. After his second year with a the team, he had not made significant improvements. Peters added 20 tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Fred earned his undergraduate degree in psychology in December 2020. He was a two-time member of the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll (2019-20). His is the cousin of former Mississippi State cornerback Johnathan Abram. Peters attended Jones County Junior College, following the footsteps of All-American and first-round NFL Draft pick Johnathan Abram.

The draft buzz on Mississippi State defensive back Fred Peters has been pretty clear cut. While he doesn’t have the stats that will blow you away, he is a tone-setter. He is strong in the run game, has good speed, and great range. He has great ball skills and disciplined eyes. In all, Peters has the tools and skillset to be a difference-maker, at the highest level.
