Jack Jones Scouting Report

Jack trusts his eyes with very good awareness. He has very good reaction skills to break quickly on the ball. He is an aware zone cornerback who is also adept in man coverage. He flashes physical hand punch at the line and straight line speed to stay with recceivers downfield.

Jones is an alert defender for zone coverage, showing good understanding of route progressions occurring behind him and a quick burst downhill to break on underneath passes in front of him. He has good instincts and anticipation reads and reacts with discipline. He is dangerous with the ball in his hands. He is a coordinated athlete with good footwork and balance. He is a heady cover player with above average feel and anticipation in space.

Areas for Improvement

Jack lacks ideal size and frame with limited measureables and short arms that render him helpless against bigger receivers. Has tense ankles and hips with choppy footwork when attempting to redirect and doesn't always look natural changing directions. Needs to tighten his angles in pursuit.

Jack needs to show better tackling technique to consistently finish. He fails to maintain inside technique in man coverage. Not a press corner. He overcomes his lack of bulk with a sharp jaw and fighter's approach but can be overmatched against NFL-caliber #1 receivers.

Jack Jones Career at Arizona State

Jack Jones was one of the country's most highly sought after prospects. He dominated both sides of the ball and on special teams at Long Beach Poly HS. As a freshman in 2016, he saw playing time as a true freshman as a reserve cornerback and on special teams. He appeared in all 13 games, making 13 tackles. He recorded a fumble recory and recorded a pass deflection. He served as a kick returner.

Jones played and started at corner in all 14 games for the Pac 12 Champion Trojans. He collected 40 total tackles, a team leading four interceptions, as well as eight pass breakups during a productive sophomore season. Attended Moorpark College for a year after transferring from Southern California. He was a four star junior college prospect with two years of eligibility remaining and was ranked No. 16 overall JUCO prospect in the country.

As a redshirt junior, Jack played in all 13 games starting one after transferring from junior college. He made an instant impact in Tempe, collecting 45 tackles and 13 pass breakups. He also registered a force fumble with three interceptions. Tied for ninth nationally with 16 passes defended on the season and his 1.33 passes defended per game was 12th in the country.

As a redshirt senior, he got the start in the season opener against USC. He made five tackles and a pass breakup. He earned the starting punt return job to begin the year.

Jack Jones NFL Draft Player Profile

Jones is an exciting NFL prospect. He is a bit small for the NFL’s eyes, but his talent is undeniable. Jones has a rare blend of clean footwork, oily hips, ideal long speed, disciplined eyes, and elite quickness for the cornerback position. It gives a great natural base to built off of as a cornerback, and he takes full advantage that by combining it with high football IQ and elite route anticipation.

There are some issues that Jones showcases. At times, he misses tackles, as stated earlier. If a team is looking to run press coverage, Jones is not the guy for them. Again, he primarily relies on his feet to win in coverage. He mirrors receivers instead of being pesky and using his hands.

Since he lacks length and some functional strength, that is likely a wise decision by Jones since he has mastered mirroring in off-man coverage so effectively. His instincts in zone coverage allow him to be scheme diverse in that manner.

Jack Jones is an NFL Draft prospect who is going to turn heads. His comeback from an academically ineligible player at USC to a guy who made the Dean’s List and is still showing out on the field at Arizona State will be a testament to this young man’s character.
