Jets don’t rule out D’Brickashaw Ferguson departure

The Jets have shown some interest in free agent tackles this offseason, leading to speculation about whether left tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson will remain with the team. Ferguson is set to have a $14.1 million cap charge and the Jets could save over $9 million by parting ways with him, something that Maccagnan also wouldn’t rule out on Friday.

“Right now I would say he would be on our roster going forward,” Maccagnan said, via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. “But we’ll see how this thing goes.”

Moving on from Ferguson would require the Jets to find another left tackle, something that is more difficult now that the best options on the free agent market have signed with other teams.

I think there is no one that should be on a protected list. If getting rid of Ferguson helps the jets with the cap & makes the team better so be it. Many times in sports today your salary is based on your past. So if you get a player that may be younger but of the same quality you may be better off with him than paying an older guy of equal talent but on his way down. Can we find that tackle maybe. Good GM's do.

I think right now if the Jets can not find a better solution at left tackle then one more year of Brick should be in the cards... But they have to plan for his replacement after this year by drafting at least one tackle in the first three rounds of this year's draft... If the Jets moved on from Brick this year they would have a $5 M dead loss that could be spread over 2 years... If we keep him this year, then more than likely he will become a cap casualty next year, dead loss $1.3 M but cap savings $11.8 M and who knows he may just retire knowing he is at the end of his career...

I agree I was going to bring up the retire but you beat me to it. I can take him for one more year or get rid of him for another tackle.

Beachum signed with Jacksonville, he was the only one I heard the Jets looking at in free agency... Now I know they like Brent Qvale, but everyone expects him to replace Breno Giacomini... Who knows right now, everything with this team is speculation just because this Front Office is playing everything close to the vest... Isn't it refreshing tho?

Do we have to make a decision before the draft or can we see how that pans out first? (Not sure when anything "kicks in") . . .

Brick has a dead loss of $5 M cut him now, during the draft, preseason or week 1 of the regular season that dead loss is it... Keep him for this year unless during the draft their ideal replacement lands in their lap at our pick... Then shop him and maybe get a mid round pick for him, eat the dead loss and open up $9 - 11.3 M in cap space... Reason I said $9 - 11.3 M is that if they pay the dead loss this year in full they will open up $9 M this year and shed the full $13 M in 2017 or split the dead loss between both '16 & '17 season opening up $11.3 M('16) & $11.5 M('17)... Brick still has the value of a late 2nd round/early 3rd round pick and the new team can renegotiate or restructure his two year salary to better fit under their cap...

To me, he seems like the perfect candidate not for a cut, but for a restructuring. Work Qvale at RT, maybe draft a OT who can be groomed for LT, and go from there.

Screen name aside, I don't have any special affinity to D'Brickashaw Ferguson. I thought it was a catchy handle. That's all.

Brick has been a good soldier since '06. But it's time to take one for the team. Restructure the contract, or take a hike. Sometimes you need to think of the good of the team. Paying him 14 million isn't for the good of the team.

Brick may make this decision himself.

I think brick takes a pay cut once Fitz is signed, to make room. Ferguson has never missed a snap, on o line ,continuity is a commodity.
