Jets Expected to Pursue Guards Boling, Franklin & Carpenter

According to the Metro New York, the Jets won’t be bringing back veteran G Willie Colon next season, and are instead expected to target younger guards in free agency.

“There’s a push to go younger along the offensive line,” a source told Metro. “In particular at right guard the Jets are going to want to go a different route. It isn’t anything Willie did or didn’t do.”

Although, their source didn’t rule out the possibility that Colon be an option to add depth to their offensive line later on in free agency.

The report mentions that the Jets will “actively pursue” some bigger names in free agency this year such as Bengals G Clint Boling, Seahawks G James Carpenter, and Broncos OL Orlando Franklin.

Franklin has the ability to play both guard and offensive tackles, and the Jets apparently believe he has an “ideal skill-set” for new OC Chan Gailey’s offense.

“His versatility is going to generate some interest,” the source said. “He could be a nice fit in Chan’s offense.”

Mike Klis of the Denver Post said on multiple occasions that Franklin is unlikely to be back, and even though he may have a decent amount of interest, the Jets have plenty of cap space to compete in free agency.

As for Colon, others have said that he’s is unlikely to return to New York next year, so this really shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

Glad to hear it. I know guard isn't a flashy position, but our o-line took a step back last year. I particularly like Franklin and Carpenter.

There's a surprising and glaring omission in that list of FA Guards.

This is a wise course of action, especially at RG. I like Aboushi at LG, and think he can grow into the position. Giacomini still worries me at RT. Ideally, you draft a potential RT who may displace him, and long-term could slide over to LT. But the immediate need is RG. Dumping Colon and going younger makes sense.

Yes, Iaputi. And now Blalock is available I think. Some good names out there but I'm curious why Iaputi wasn't mentioned.

I'Ve heard that he has steadily declined since he first took the starting job. Could be a reason. Think he's close to 30 too. Blalock would be a great addition but I am unsure of his age.

We need a big upgrade at RG. This can go a long way to improve the line. LG is probably a 3 man race with Winters, Aboushi, and Doozier. Sounds like we will have good depth.

Admitted, I don't know a ton about the guards around the league but Franklin sounds like a great option. Iuptia has been discussed a lot but not sure he fits the new offense as well. He may be the best run blocker in the league but he is average at best at pass blocking.

I think that Breno's mauler style is not really a fit either in Gailey's offense...

will get too much money right? that could be the reason jets wont go after him, too much for a guard

I believe Iaputi is 28. Strictly on what I've read from others, it sounds like he's going to get paid well based more on his name than on his overall performance last season. He's had a few really good years, and he's still relatively young. I wouldn't mind Iaputi, but I still like the other two as options for the Jets more.

He's the big fish, 28 335lbs absolute beast run blocker that isn't moving as well in space any more and has struggled with pass protection the past two seasons. I dont think the value matches his price tag. I think the Redskins and Bucs are going all in on him anyway. I think the Jets want a guy who is good in the pass and run game, not just the run game. We have that problem at RT, lets not have the same problem at RG and RT that we did last year (great for the run game, but the worst pass blocking right side of an oline in the entire NFL).

I agree with this, Iupati will command big money but not really worth it terms of scheme inflexibility. From what I've read Franklin is the better option for us at this point, and he also gives us that flexibility to move outside in a pinch.

Actually Franklin prefers to play RT over RG. Lupati will cost too much. My only question in bringing in a FA guard is that do we really know what we have in Dozier ? I'd hate to sit the kid if he's better or just as good as a FA ?

I agree about Dozier. With an entirely new coaching staff and front office, no one knows how good the kid is, and we may end up paying for a FA OG that we don't really need. With a guy like Franklin, you can move him to RT and slide Dozier to RG in case of injury to Giaco or Giaco proves to be a poor fit for Gailey's offense.

Maybe Dozier is a candidate to take over at LG if he develops? Franklin and Breno on the right side, with maybe even Breno sliding inside to guard and Franklin to RT? Dozier is a big question mark this year and could be a huge piece to the puzzle if he develops.

In the FYI dept, Cy, the dude from San Fran is Iupati, not Lupati.
