In 2015, Darrelle Revis looked vulnerable.

When facing the upper echelon of today's wide recievers, Revis was beat on more than one occasion. The Jaguars' Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns found success Week 8. Texans superstar DeAndre Hopkins scorched him for a long touchdown Week 11. Bills wideout Sammy Watkins beat him countless times Week 17.

Revis was far from bad, but wasn't the guaranteed lock-down stud of yesteryear.

Which has raised the question: Should the future Hall of Famer consider a position change?

Jets Camp Day 6: 3 Stars
"There will probably be conversations in the future about maybe moving my position to safety," Revis said on the Boomer and Carton Show on Thursday. "But as of right now, I still feel I can play at a high level, and play the cornerback position at a high level."

Revis' interest in moving to safety isn't anything new, nor is it uncommon for veteran cornerbacks. In fact, many players have extended their careers making the switch. The two most popular being Rod Woodson and Charles Woodson. In Washington, the Redskins are working on a similar move with DeAngelo Hall.

With Revis specifically, there is little doubt on his ability to play safety. He's got just every intangible needed to be successful. Obviously, he can cover, but Revis is also one of the league's more intelligent players and better tacklers.

"Darrelle is a pro. He understands himself," Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said on the Boomer and Carton Show shortly after Revis left. "We think he's a heck of a football player. It's not outside the realm of possibility. But Darrelle is a corner, and we like him as a corner."

Of course, there is the strong possibility that Revis' struggles in 2015 were more due to injury, than decline. The cornerback played last season with a bum wrist that required offseason surgery. He's been sidelined throughout organized team activities, minicamp, and most of training camp as he recovers.

When asked, Revis indicated it contributed to his struggles.

What happened at Jets camp Wednesday?

"It was pretty bad," Revis said. "But I fought through it. As long as I can run and continue to do my job and not be a distraction or hinderance to the defense [I'm going to play.]

"Sometimes I had to overcompensate with the left arm. When I'd try to jam, I would use [motions] as a guidance and then try to bring my right hand into it. In the past, that was one of my biggest strengths of my game was the ability to play bump and run."

JetNation was back at Florham Park, Shane Sullivan covered the practice for us on Wednesday. Darrelle Revis didn’t take part in team periods. Zach Sudfeld and Bernard Pierce were both out and Dexter McDougle is still dealing with a hamstring injury.

Ladainian Tomlinson and Dennis Rodman were a few of the “celebrities” in attendance.

Ryan Fitzpatrick showed up with a new haircut, and the offense had a strong day. Jace Amaro stood out in particular.

Breno Giacomini was on the field in the rehab area as he works towards coming off of the PUP list.

It was a good day for Fitzpatrick and Geno Smith, the same can’t be said for Bryce Petty who could be playing himself off of this roster.

You can’t judge the running game right now, we will learn more about them when the offensive line is healthy and they are playing for real in the preseason. But the defense won the battle on the ground on Wednesday.

Jets camp Day 6 injury report | Darrelle Revis, Matt Forte, Dexter McDougle

who else has noticed "hamstring" issues seem to be a training camp/holdout problem all around the league, every year..

i would bet, if i chose to check the "injury reports" for the other 31 teams, i'm sure i can find 25+ teams dealing with hamstring issues..

seems to me, it's guys convincing themselves they did the work to be ready for camp but didn't.....

On 7th day of training camp, the Jets' veterans rested

New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick leaves the field after practice at the NFL football team's training camp in Florham Park, N.J., Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2016. Fitzpatrick's freshly cut hair is all the buzz at training camp. The bushy-bearded quarterback reported for training camp last week with a well-coiffed head of hair, sort of a puffed-up pompadour that had his teammates cracking jokes. FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) And on the seventh day of training camp, the Jets' veterans rested.

New York quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, running back Matt Forte, linebacker David Harris and wide receivers Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker all sat out team drills as coach Todd Bowles appeared to give several of the older and established players Thursday off.

Bowles has mentioned wanting to keep his players fresh through the long, hot days of camp. After a day off Monday, this was the third straight practice for the Jets. They have two more before a day off Sunday.

With Fitzpatrick resting, Geno Smith handled the first-team snaps.

Meanwhile, cornerback Darrelle Revis is practicing in team drills for just the second time in training camp. He is being eased back after having offseason wrist surgery.

Breaking down kicker situation
by Michael Pallas 35 minutes ago Follow @mpallasjetpress

Last season for the New York Jets, the special teams was atrocious. The kickers were no exception as there is a heated battle in the positional group so far during training camp.

The depth chart is pretty much set at many positions. However, there will be a true competition for the kickers in camp, and expect Ross Martin, the undrafted free agent rookie to fight hard for a starting spot.
RELATED STORY: Special teams is key for playoff run
Kicker is probably the easiest position from college to the pros. There’s no contact for kickers, so they don’t necessarily have to adjust to the speed of the game. So, Martin should be able to make the transition.

Last season the Jets kickers were some of the worst in the league. According to the website Team Rankings, the Jets’ field goal percentage of 81.8% had them finish 24th in the league and their kickoff touch back percentage of 39.5% was 31st in the NFL.

The Jets have a tough schedule this season, and they may be kicking a lot of field goals. The Jets attempted 33 field goals, which was 10th in the NFL in 2015, and they missed six.

Last season, three teams attempted 40+ field goals. Expect the Jets to be in that range this season.

Kicker Nick Folk is known for his consistency but he has an injury that might set him back going forward.

On November 10, 2015, the Jets placed Folk on injured reserve due to a quad injury.

He went 13-16 (81.3%) prior to landing on IR.

He made both field goals from the 50+ range and three out of six from 40-49.

Folk’s only competition is kicker Ross Martin, who has a booming leg. He has converted 83.9% of his field goals at Duke. This includes 90% from 50+ and 13-16 from 40+ in his junior and senior seasons. He scored 100+ points in three of his four season and finished three points short in 2013.

Marin’s only weakness is on kickoffs. According to his NFL.com draft profile, he averaged 59.9 yards per kickoff at Duke, but kickers don’t have to be used on kickoffs. The Jets can use Lachlan Edwards, who is most likely to land punting duties, on kickoffs.

The Jets should consider the scoring aspect of the position over the kickoffs, because they don’t have to use their kicker for them. Despite setting many individual records in 2015, as a team the Jets were not sufficient enough when it came to scoring points.

According to Sporting Charts, the Jets ranked 14th in the NFL in scoring percentage. They scored on 39.7% of their drives and averaged 59 yards per drive.
MUST READ: The battle between Brandon Marshall and Antonio Brown
They will need to attempt more kicks in the 40+ range, because they didn’t have kickers with great legs. The Jets will also need to convert more scoring opportunities. So, Martin will most likely land the job.

How Juston Burris became Ryan Fitzpatrick’s barber

Updated August 4, 2016 5:22 PM
By Kimberley A. Martin kimberley.martin@newsday.com

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — A barber Juston Burris is not.
But thanks to the rookie cornerback’s ball-hawking skills, quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is now walking around with a buzz cut.

The Jets quarterback made headlines on Wednesday after arriving at practice without his messy mop of hair. But, as a source told Newsday that afternoon, the close-cropped hairdo wasn’t Fitzpatrick’s idea. It was actually his penance for losing a team-issued bet.

According to Burris, the wager was the brainchild of safety Rontez Miles. And it was Burris who was given the honor of shaving Fitzpatrick’s head in front of the entire team.

During their pre-practice stretching period on Tuesday, a couple of veterans presented a wager for their scruffy quarterback: The next defensive player to pick off Fitzpatrick can shave his unruly hair. Fitzpatrick accepted the terms of the bet. But no one — least of all him — expected his tresses would ultimately be trimmed by a rookie.

It was Burris’ air-tight coverage on a deep ball thrown to Brandon Marshall Tuesday afternoon that resulted in the crucial interception.

“That’s what they call me around here, ‘The Rook,’ ” the fourth-round pick told Newsday and The Associated Press on Thursday. “He made a bet and I picked him off and I was able to cut his hair . . . I just so happened to get it. I was the one to do it.”

And as soon as Burris hauled in the big pick in practice, he ran straight over to Miles.

“We talked about it, we laughed about it,” Burris said. “I honestly didn’t think it was really going to happen. But they called me up in the team meeting and said I could do it.”

In front of everyone, the rookie went to work on sculpting Fitzpatrick’s new ’do. But things didn’t go according to plan.

Fitzpatrick’s haircut has Jets camp buzzing

Asked to rate his tonsorial skills, Burris shook his head.

“Terrible. It was terrible,” he said. “Bad. He had to go back over. He had do his own thing. I’m not good with clippers.”
Fitzpatrick, however, doesn’t mind his new buzz cut. During a Thursday morning interview on WFAN he confirmed that Burris was the culprit, but said his mini-’fro was “stupid” and needed to be cut anyway.

Parting with his wild mane was the easy part. Accepting that it was Burris who was responsible? That was tough.
“I threw it to a rookie, too, which was awful, like a double whammy,” Fitzpatrick said during the radio interview. “But it was one of those things. It got picked off, and I actually was kind of smiling about it, because I finally got to cut that thing off the top of my head.”

Injured RB Matt Forte expected to miss Jets' preseason opener

5:37 PM ET
Rich Cimini
ESPN Staff Writer

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Matt Forte's preseason debut with the New York Jets will have to wait until at least the second game.

The 30-year-old running back, one of the team's big offseason acquisitions, still hasn't practiced because of a pulled hamstring and is expected to miss the Aug. 11 opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

NFLWho's out? Who's good to go? Who's questionable? We've got all the latest injury news from around the NFL. Injury Wire
"Yeah, it's safe to say [that]," coach Todd Bowles said Thursday after practice.

Forte suffered the injury while training before camp started and has yet to participate in team drills. On Tuesday, he did light positional work, fueling optimism, but he spent the last two days as a spectator.

Bowles downplayed the injury, saying the plan is to bring him along deliberately. He doesn't expect Forte to miss the Sept. 11 season opener.

"Right now, he's not in jeopardy of missing any time, but we'll see as the days go by," Bowles said.

As a veteran player, Forte doesn't need a heavy load of reps in camp to get ready for the season, so sitting out the first preseason game isn't a huge deal. If he also misses the second game, it might be time for concern.

In other injury news, cornerback Darrelle Revis (wrist) saw an increased workload in practice, as he took part in a bulk of the team reps. He took a handful of reps Tuesday, then sat out Wednesday.

"He ran better today," Bowles said. "He has to get in a little football shape the next couple of days. It was OK overall."

Backup linebacker Mike Catapano, who underwent foot surgery last season, is back to practice. Cornerback Dexter McDougle (hamstring) remained on the sideline. Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, still on the physically-unable-to-perform list as he recovers from a broken leg, reiterated that he expects to be ready for the season opener. Wilkerson wouldn't give a timetable for his return -- neither would Bowles -- but it wouldn't be a surprise if he misses the first two preseason games.

In practice, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker got the day off, allowing some of the second-stringers to get added reps. Geno Smith (11-for-19) ran the starting offense and was solid. The story of the day was No. 3 quarterback Bryce Petty (5-for-12), who threw three touchdowns after a sloppy start. He hit rookie Jalin Marshall for an 80-yard score.

This is a big camp for Petty, whose performance could determine whether the Jets carry three or four quarterbacks. Bowles said Petty has been "up and down. ... He's getting more consistent in the things he's doing."
