Jets trade Hackenberg to Raiders

I don’t think the issue was coaching regarding Hackenberg. Most draft experts were shocked the Jets reached on Hack in the 2nd round. The scouting reports all specifically mentioned his mechanics as a big red flag. I believe Macc thought a few years learning the system would eventually pay off for him. But when the opportunity to get a blue chip prospect like Darnold came along, Macc righty decided to move on from a project like Hack to a more “sure thing” player like Darnold.

Just my theory. I could be wrong.
A couple years learning the system does not affect mechanics. If you identify what you consider a diamond in the rough, and you stick it in the cabinet with beautiful diamond rings, it does not polish itself.

If I see a qb and I identify him as a potential star with some training, and I invest a high pick on him, I don't leave him to his own devices. I get him the instruction needed.

I may be ignorant of how football coaching works, but doesn't it involve coaching?

The comments about the coaching staff do concern me a bit.

That said, Bates is one of the few guys in the league who could develop a QB like that. If that didn't happen, why not? Did Hack not take to what they were doing with him? Or did the Jets realize early on it was a wasted pick, and that it wasn't worth it?

It’s tough to say without actually knowing what Maccagnan/Bowles/Bates’ mindset was regarding Hackenberg. Maybe they thought he’d adjust to the NFL despite a funky delivery like Bernie Kosar and Phillip Rivers did. I don’t know. You may be right. Maybe they did drop the ball on this kid. Maccagnan wouldn’t be the first GM to gamble on a QB high in the draft only to see it fail.

Regardless, they drafted him too high, and he’ll go down in the Jets Hall of Shame of 2nd round busts.

But Macc’s got Darnold now, and that could eliminate this stench entirely in two years.

You may get into a good Engineering school - your high school math grades were good. But if you keep failing Calculus, maybe it isn't the instructors.

That said, I remember that one of the greatest talent evaluators in NFL history, George Halas, cut future HOF quarterback George Blanda. And Johnny Unitas was cut in training camp. So maybe Hack will be able to hack it somewhere else.

I thought he was the future 2years ago... Now the Jets have a new future... Maybe he can take the steps the Sanchize couldn't

Damn. I was hoping to see him compete with Darnold.

Well that takes care of the QB situation.
