Connor Hughes was into the second quarter of reviewing the film for Jets vs Giants and he still hadn't seen the Jets in a three man front. Brian Costello shared the same observation, mostly four man fronts (4-3 and 4-2-5) for the starters:

... and you saw the results, they flat-out steamrolled the Giants O-line.

very encouraged by this..

bowles is not married to a base 3-4 & is figuring out ways to get his best unit's top 3 players on the field at the same time..

On passing downs you can remove McLendon, move Sheldon or Wilkerson inside, install Catapano or Bishop at stand-up Rush DE, take Harris off the field, move Skrine into the slot, and put your Nickel (Marcus Williams) at Corner.

I mentioned this in the game day thread, until the backups got in it was basically all four man fronts and they dominated using that lineup. It also gives us a breather at linebacker knowing that jenkins and mauldin can share time rather than being relied upon to play all game long.

Some old Scout posters had been pushing for this for a while. Right now may be the time to make the switch, for a few reasons. For one, the team has gotten more athletic on the DL, especially with Snacks leaving and bringing in McLendon. Snacks was the prototype 3-4 NT, but the Jets do not necessarily have that now. Secondly, the team is more athletic at LB, especially from the last two drafts with Mauldin, Lee, and Jenkins. And third, the DL is still the best and deepest unit on the team, so going with a system that makes the most of that seems wise.

Actually at times I thought I saw the Jets playingwhat might amount to 4-4-3 with Revis deep as a center fielder.

whats the word on Harris shoulder - and if he is out does that mean that 4-3 is more logical - use more of our deep quality DL - and fewer LB?

We dodged a bullet, its a bad bruise, two weeks recovery, but X-Rays were negative. Bowles said its too soon to tell if he'll be ready for the opener, but other reports said they expect him to be ready. I guess you can say; cautiously optimistic.

IMO a move to a base 4-3 alignment is what is best for this defense. It's the only they can get all of their DL talent on the field at the same time and keep OL off of Darron Lee.

As was obvious in the Redskins game, on the 4th down play, Brandon Sherff engaged Darron Lee and tossed him about 10 feet. Lee is simply not big enough to take even average linemen and win. It's not going to happen.

Lee's future success/failure is 100% reliant on Todd Bowles imagination and ability to put Lee in positions to utilize his speed and make plays. He needs to remain unblocked by pulling Guards or anything like that.

A move like this allows Bowles to keep his very best players on the field and simultaneously put Lee in position to succeed.

This move makes too much sense to ignore. The alternative IMO puts this defense in a much more vulnerable spot....

Agreed on all counts.

In Dave Anderson's book about SB III (read it if you haven't) he recounts a discussion between defensive tackle Paul Rochester and coach Buddy Ryan. (I paraphrase)
Paul - "If they go to an unbalanced line, do I line up over the center or the guard?"
Ryan - "Just line up and hit somebody".

While I like the 4 man line, I don't want an defense that depends on schemes and dreams. I want a defense that can dominate the other team and get the ball back to the offense in as few plays as possible.

Jet LB corp still scares me a bit. It's an aging Harris and a whole lot of question marks. Pryor at Safety better take a big leap forward.

I think we all want that. But you also have to understand that your opponent can learn ways around your talent, Brady is near perfect at this. So hiding your intentions is necessary, but not over thinking and when in doubt, punish someone are good fall backs.

I like it. There might be some growing pains, but the nfl is becoming a younger mans game every year. I'm confident that these guys wouldn't be starting if they weren't good enough.

I think they'll be protected by our extremely good d line. Other teams will be under such quick duress that there are bound to be some sloppy or tipped passes up for grabs.

The defensive line ran a lit of 4 man fronts last night too, even using smaller defensive ends on both sides. I think we are headed that way.
