John Lovett Scouting ReportPhysical, attacking running back. Lovett uses choppy compact stride length downhill. At Baylor he flourished in gap and power schemes. He is at his best running wide while setting up lead blockers. He slows safeties and linebackers with hesitation steps. He has plus vision, and is comfortable in both one-back or two back settings. John has a darting style allows him to escape defenders who show gap commitment too soon. |
Areas for ImprovementHe needs to become more comfortable between the tackles. Lovett will duck head and finish a run prematurely rather than probing for more interior space. He flashes ability to finish with authority, ball security issues and suffers from focus drops out of backfield. |
John Lovett Career at Baylor/Penn StateLovett spent three seasons at Baylor. Lovett led Baylor in rushing during the 2017-18 seasons. He became the 39th Baylor player in program history to rush for 1,000 yards. John appeared in all 14 games on the year, starting eight of them. He finished with 655 total rushing yards on 103 attempts with five TDs, an average of 6.4 yards per carry, also had eight receptions for 66 total yards and returned five kicks for 104 yards. He has 1,673 yards rushing in his career, good for 20th most in program history. Started all five games in 2020 as a senior. Ran the ball 45 times for 130 yards and a touchdown on the year, while also catching nine passes for 49 yards and a touchdown. Lovett transferred to Penn State as a graduating senior, to play for his hometown school. He is was rarely used, appearing in nine games averaging three yards per carry for total of 177 yards rushing. He also contributed in the passing attack reeling in nine catches for 36 yards and fielded four kick returns for 63 yards. |
John Lovett NFL Draft Player ProfileAbove-average sized running back with a muscular frame that carries its weight proportionally. Running style is unique in the sense that Lovett stays upright but houses an eyebrow-raising amount of burst with the ball in his hands. Employs good instincts when running to the outside and navigates his way to efficient yardage in these situations. Football intelligence is apparent; knows his assignments and is an able and willing blocker in pass protection. Chippy teammate who does the little things to help the offense succeed. |
