Josh Whyle Scouting Report

Josh is a lean athlete with obvious upside. He has soft hands. He flashes the ability to make the outstanding catch. He has extremely good, soft, natural hands. He consistently makes the clean catch. He is capable of tracking passes from many angles.

He has good sideline awareness, taps quick feet to stay in bounds. He varies the speed of his routes, using hesitation and shoulder fakes to get the defenders guessing. He looks and runs like a lanky receiver. He has deceptive speed and enough quickness to separate. He has of glue, about as good as you will see in the sport. He excels finding soft spots in zone coverage and using his large frame to shield defenders.

Areas for Improvement

Whyle is inconsistent with his release off the line of scrimmage. He struggles tracking the ball over his shoulder. He is a bit high hipped and slow to get rolling. His fram limits upside as a blocker.

Josh Whyle Career at Cincinnati

Josh a three star prospect ranked as one of the Top 10 tight ends in the 2018 class and Top 14 players in Ohio. He was a standout prep at La Salle HS for Coach Pat McLaughlin and Coach Jim Hilvert. While Whyle was at La Salle they had a 50-8 record with three Ohio HS Athletic Association Division II titles. Entering his freshman year at Cincinnati, he suffered a preseason injury in training camp which limited his availability early in the season. He redshirted, but utilized a new NCAA rule which allowed him to play in four games as a true freshman.

Following year, Josh saw in action in 12 games, making a pair of catches for 51 yards. He was named to the 2019 AAC All Academic Team. In 2020 Josh Earned Third Team All America honors from Pro Football Focus and Second Team ALL AAC accolodes at tight end after a breakout 2020 campaign. He made his first career start against Houston but was a key contributor on offense and special teams in all 10 games during UC's AAC Championship season. He led the team with 353 receiving yards on 28 catches with six touchdowns.

Whyle has a very tall and well-rounded frame that makes him a consistent candidate to be a mismatch against most cornerbacks he faced. He is a very physical blocker who is built enough to make an impact in that area of the game. Has the versatility to play in-line and in the slot. He shows flashes as a receiver to be a consistent target for his team. Josh can win through his route with size and physicality.
