The top hat and rabbit can rest. FitzMagic is calling it a career.

Ryan Fitzpatrick is retiring after 17 NFL seasons, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Thursday. Fitzpatrick is in talks with Prime Video for a key role in Amazon's NFL coverage this season, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport added.

Fitzpatrick's NFL journey was as unlikely as it was thrilling. The Harvard product entered the league as a seventh-round pick (250th overall) of the St. Louis Rams in 2005, the last quarterback selected in that draft. What followed was a trying, but magical career filled with uniform changes -- he started at least one game for nine different NFL teams, the most by any player since at least 1950 -- and heart-stopping moments.

There was Fitzpatrick's showdown with Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger on Monday Night Football in 2018, a game in which Fitzpatrick completed 30 of 50 passes for 411 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions, and threw for 430-plus yards for a second straight week. The aerial assault captivated the football viewing nation, but as was the case for much of Fitzpatrick's career, it ended in a 30-27 defeat. In 2015, Fitzpatrick nearly led the New York Jets to an unlikely playoff berth in their first season under coach Todd Bowles, but after winning five straight games between Weeks 12-16, the Jets fell just short of the postseason, losing to Buffalo 22-17 in Week 17.

And there was, of course, the legendary 2018 postgame presser in which Fitzpatrick wore teammate DeSean Jackson's track suit, complete with a gold chains and a pair of aviator sunglasses.

Fitzpatrick didn't compile a Hall of Fame career, but he certainly made it worth watching, both on and off the field. Fitzpatrick threw a touchdown pass to 62 different players in his career, coming in behind a trio of passers (Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Vinny Testaverde) who have thrown a touchdown pass to more than 62 different players in NFL history. He became known for authoring thrilling finishes, no matter for which team he was playing, and the lone disappointment came with the territory he didn't reach: the postseason. Fitzpatrick's 34,990 passing yards are the most in NFL history by a player who never played in a playoff game, and stand as the 32nd most in league history.

at the start of the 2016 season, after he held out, my kid saw him make a throw in the opener against CINCY.

the receiver was covered.
he had open field in front of him.
my son said "dad, he sold us out to get big money. last year he would have run it and found someone to hit".

i gotta say of all of the douche's who forced the Jets to over pay, he is the only one that bothered me, because i really felt like he relished being a Jet.

totally over it now, and loved what he did with his career... he went everywhere and started. so cool.
i bet the main reason he never played a playoff game was mostly of his doing. he went to trash teams just so he could sling it.

love it!!

Awful... not even close.
Perennial SB Winner... not even close.
Career Back Up on a Team with said Perennial SB Winner.... BINGO!!!!

I think Fitz knew the only way he'd play was to be on bad teams, so instead of getting back up scratch on playoff teams, he had one of the wildest rides of all time and played convincing teams he can keep a seat warm for their next failed super star for almost starter money.

God touched him with a great brain and a passion to play. Good for him.

Fitz was a backup quality QB that always got a chance to start, but could never deliver. 2015 was fun until Fitz became Fitz again.

2015 season: Fitz lead the Jets to 10 wins with 3905 yards passing and 31 TD’s. Those are damn good stats.

Yes, he threw those 3 picks in the last game against Buffalo, but Fitzmagic was fun to watch that year. Best QB play we’ve seen around here in a while.

He had one winning season and it was a fun one with the Jets. He choked his one chance at a playoff game. 2015 was lightning in the bottle for Fitz.

but true to Fitz form as the gunslinger he was, he dropped a dime to receiver Kenbrell Thompkins who had both hands on it... he was going to be off to the races for a game winning TD but their safety took the only angle he could have to make a play on the ball, and knocked it out.

my heart broke watching the replay... watching it live, you didn't see just how clutch the safety play was, because you didn't see it was going for a TD.

when we picked him up that offseason, i showed my son the highlights of Vinny in '98.
I told him we were in for a special year, because of all the weapons we had and we put a vet QB in for them like we did when Vinny was inserted in '98.

Great ride that season was!!

I was more heartbroken with the 3 times Fitz threw it to the Bills.

Gotta admit, I never was to thrilled or happy at all really that Fitz was our starting QB. Even in 2015, I believe that was damn near a playoff year with him? It was intriguing, I’ll say at best but I knew it wouldn’t last. I knew he was just a stop gap guy who truly wasn’t legit. He would play good enough to keep you interested but fuck it up when it mattered most.

To me, it just played into the same ole Jets mood. Either we were a true laughing stock or decent but no real threat at all. Either way, you truly didn’t need to worry about us. I’d rather we’re be horrible if need be and build the team correctly with a true franchise QB and grow to legitimacy. The Bill Parcells years and I’ll give Rex Ryan his do, his first two years we were legit. We haven’t been that way since.

Hopefully that’s what we’re building now with Saleh, Joe D and Z.W. It truly does seem like it’s leaning that way. Only time will tell!

Some of our best football was played during the Herman Edwards tenure. Funny thing is some of the worst was also played then . Usually had a lot to do with the status of 10 as coach called him .

All good, @jetgreen13 .... i wasn't trying to change minds! i think you're right. he reverted back to who he was in that game for the bad, but for that one play foiled by the BUFF safety, he almost came through with the good that made 2015 so entertaining.

that game was sort of an embodiment of him... when he wasn't playing with house money, he wasn't good. but there was almost enough Fitz-Magic left in the tank. woulda, shoulda, coulda... didn't.

Rex's era, IMO, was a sugar high coming off of a combo of Mangini getting a lot of glue players + Free Agents working out + an un-capped 2010 year.

Parcells built a team, and the fabric lasted through Groh to Herm that made us a playoff contender for a number of years.

what's funny (but not really) is that if Pete Carroll could have done a little bit better in NE, the Parcells era in NY "might" have transcended into the Belichick era had Kraft not needed a new coach.

in the end, Beli wanted out from under Parcells.
in the end, Herm was a veteran's coach who didn't have a vision for building a team.
