Luke Wattenberg Scouting ReportLuke moves well and squares to finish on the move. He is a better anchor than his height suggest and capable of absorbing a punch and recovering quickly. He gets everything out of his adequate size and frame with good length. He has added bulk to his frame and flashes functional strength to get a good push in the run game. Luke has smooth lateral movement skills with good foot quickness. His first off the snap and set quickly. He is aggressive and extends his arms into contact, delivering a sharp punch. He dips his shoulder and moves his feet to get outside leverage when needed. He is strong and low coming out of his stance, effective in short yardage situations. Luke is fundamentally sound and understands blocking angles, using body positioning to his advantage. He has disciplined awareness and good intelligence.

Areas for ImprovementWattenberg lacks foot speed to be a major threat as a lead blocker outside. He is inconsistent latching on and gets lazy, bending at the waist. He attack when necessary, though he won't consistenly dominate and can lose balance overextending. He whiffs on blocks after beaten initially. He lacks range and lateral quickness. Luke plays too high and without proper leverage, pad levels and he can be passive. He bends at the waist and loses leverage, also has a tendency to lunge and lean too far when flustered. He is not an explosive athleted and has limited range. He will pop upright off the snap and needs to stay balanced. He needs to avoid the habit of lunging.

Luke Wattenberg Career at WashingtonLuke Wattenberg played high school football for coach Jim Hartigan. He was named to the LA Times all area first team and Orange County Register All County first team in 2015. As a senior in 2015, he helped the Lions to a 7-3 record. He made scout.com's top 300 nationally, taking the No. 239 spot. Luke was scout.com's No. 19 offensive tackle. He was listed by rivals.com as the No. 18 offensive tackle and the No. 43 overall prospect in California. As a true freshman, he did not see any game action during the 2016 season, utilizing his redshirt. In 2017, he played in all 11 games starting five. He was named to the Academic All Pac-12 second team. He saw his first game action as a Husky in the Washington win over Montana. He also saw a good deal of playing time in the Husky win over Fresno State. Luke got his first start at left tackle in the victory over Oregon. He also started at left tackle against Stanford, Utah, Washington State and Penn State. As a redshirt sophomore, he started all 14 games of the 2018 season at left guard. He made a tackle (after a turnover) at Oregon. Following year he started all 13 games of the 2019 season at left guard. He was named the UW coaches' lineman of the week after the win at BYU. Entering his redshirt senior season he started at center in all four games. He earned All Pac-12 Honorable Mention. He was named Pac-12 Offensive Lineman of the week after the Arizona game. He won the Iron Husky Award at the team's postseason awards banquet. Luke opted to return as a Graduate with a year of eligibilty in 2021. He earned All Pac-12 honorable mention. He started all 12 games at center. He was named UW coaches lineman of the game after the win vs. Arkansas State.He won the same honor after the UW win at Arizona. He won the John P. Angel Lineman of the Year Award at the team's postseason banquet. |
Luke Wattenberg NFL Draft Player ProfileLuke Wattenberg is the most experienced offensive linemen for the Washington Huskies. He was a fifth season as a starter. He offers some good versaitlity to any team who may draft him. Has played center looking natural but thrived at left guard. He was the man they wanted to run behind in short yardage situations. He was most effective doing it. Luke displays good bend and quickness as well as upper body strength. The downside is that Wattenberg struggled last year against big 0-tech defenders, oftentimes being overpowered from the snap. He added weight and functional strength his ability to gain leverage improved but it is a start of a work in progress.
