Jets to make a run at Doug Marrone
Jets rebuffed by first GM candidate: Vikings' George Paton
The Jets are scheduled to speak with former Bills coach Doug Marrone about their head coaching opening on either Sunday or Monday, according to a league source.
Marrone, who opted out of his deal with Buffalo on Wednesday night, also has interviews lined up with the Falcons and Bears, according to the source.
The Bronx native is seen as the favorite to land the Jets’ job, as there is strong mutual interest between the two sides. A source said Jets consultant Charley Casserly is a huge Marrone fan.
Marrone, 50, is coming off a two-year stint as Bills coach with a 15-17 record. The Bills were 9-7 this year, their first winning season in a decade. He was the head coach at Syracuse University prior to that.
In a stunning move, Marrone opted out of his contract with Buffalo due to uncertainty about the power structure. When Terry and Kim Pegula purchased the Bills in October, it triggered a three-day window when Marrone could walk away from the Bills.
The Jets search team, led by owner Woody Johnson, Casserly and consultant Ron Wolf, is scheduled to interview a trio of candidates in Seattle on Friday and Saturday. Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and assistant head coach/offensive line Tom Cable will interview for the coaching job and pro personnel director Trent Kirchner will interview for the GM job.
