New Jets DB coach thinks Darrelle Revis can make smooth transition to safety

As a fitful season for cornerback Darrelle Revis unfolded, there was discussion inside and outside the Jets organization about the possibility of moving the veteran to safety.

It’s something we’ve seen plenty of other aging corners do late in their careers to extend their time as an effective NFL player and it’s something that Revis said he’s open to doing heading into next season. Dennard Wilson, who was hired as the Jets’ defensive backs coach last week, thinks Revis would make a smooth transition to a new position.

“Darrelle is a guy that has a lot of football intelligence,” Wilson said, via NJ.com. “I wouldn’t think it wouldn’t be a problem for him to pick it up.”

Revis’ ability to make the switch to safety is a question that may be asked this offseason. Where he will be playing while potentially making a change is one that’s going to get answered first, however. The Jets can clear $9 million in salary cap room if they part ways with Revis before the second day of the new league year and current cap projections show them in serious need of such space.

Revis would still account for $6 million in dead money under that scenario, however, so the Jets may try to find a salary that saves them some money while still keeping Revis on board in hopes that 2017 brings better results. Revis hasn’t said whether he’d take a pay cut to stay with the Jets, but we’ll probably get a clearer idea about that possibility in the coming weeks.

Lets see he went to tampa and was in cover2/zone which meant he had to do pre-snap reads and he sucked. he has lost two steps and can not tackle anymore...please cut him he adds NO value.

Have they actually made the decision to do this or is it still speculation?
i doubt it..

i certainly haven't heard anything to that affect here or anywhere else online..

i'm done patting them on the back for keeping things close to the vest though..

what's so great about that strategy if the results still end up ass backwards??

Any Player that quits can leave my Jets NOW! I dont want any player that does that around the rest of my young players. Revis better not be on Jets next season along with Pryor who I've said at his drafting, is a bust as a first round pick. Clean house & start over.

Learn the position?
First, he'll have top learn how to tackle, instead of just shoulder blocking someone down.

We have $300k in cap space.... Revis wont be a Jet. We need cash to turn this thing around.
Dont want Asomugha 2.0 around here anymore.

I wish the title said" New Jets DB coach thinks Calvin Pryor can play safety."

At this point, it makes more sense to cut ties with Revis and take the $ hit.

I saw a player who declined rapidly last season. I've seen enough.

Agreed if he comes back to play Safety he comes back on a reworked contract that will save us the same, if not more, as if we would have cut him outright.... He cannot stay under the same contract... NOPE

you're right, he won't..

bowles would be a bigger fool than i believe him to be if he watches & defends (again) a guy that isn't interested in playing football anymore..

cut bait..

I'm fine cutting Revis based on lack of effort.
But I'm also ok with the following situation:
Cutting Revis still costs us 6 million. Switching him to safety at 7 mill will cost us 1 million. Cutting Gilchrist will save us 6 million I think. That counteracts Revis 6 million in dead money in a way.
So, is switching from Gilchrist to Revis worth $1 million? I think it could be. If the coaches really believe Revis can be a ball hawk, then do it. You are keeping a hall of famer in the locker room, showing loyalty which players respect, and you have a weapon for coaches. Revis could at any time show safety then play at cb. You could really mess with Brady. Also, he still sells jerseys.

I don't really care about Revis fate, but I see a switch to safety as being a possible benefit.
