Nolan Turner Scouting Report

Nolan is a solid run defender, he has the ability to shed wide receiver blocks and comes up aggressively against the run. He does show the awareness to stay home and set the edge in run support and has a good motor to pursue downfield. He’s already a very rangy safety, showing strong instincts to know where he needs to be.

Turner mostly played nickel and dime situations. He was most efftive playing underneath zone, where he could react quickly and flow between routes. He shows ability to break down in the open field and make saving tackles when he is the last line of defense.

Nolan is a capable man coverage defender against runningbacks, and tight ends. Turner was largely tasked with covering Clyde Edwards-Helaire during the National Championship and did so well. He has quick feet to mirror, backpedals well to protect his leverage and closes well in man. He can navigate around picks well and has the foot speed to stay with faster backs. He shows the timing to jump routes and come up with interceptions as well, with solid ball skills. He is generally a solid tackler.

Nolan Turner Areas for Improvement

When playing deep zone, he tends to drift and does not trust his foot speed, afraid to be beaten over the top, which limits his ability to close and make plays in the secondary. He should not be used as a deep zone defender at the next level due to his lack of awareness, reaction time, and elite foot speed.

Generally a solid tackler, he can tend to dive and miss tackles, lacking elite change of direction to match up after the catch.

Lacks elite change of direction ability which limits his ceiling as a true deep coverage safety.

Hesitates to work up from his assignment in man coverage sometimes. Not particularly strong in this category. When working against faster, better route runners, will struggle to stay with them. Doesn’t locate the football well.

Nolan Turner NFL Draft Player Profile

Nolan hits well but doesn’t show much wrap up ability. He takes good pursuit angles, except when trying to make a play in the backfield. He isn’t particularly good at working downhill, would much rather work laterally. Works the sidelines well with excellent range and solid angles of pursuit.

Nolan Turner has shown the ability to play very solid deep coverage in zone as well as work into underneath coverage in Clemson’s pro-style zone schemes. If Turner can take away tight ends with his physicality by contesting the catch point better.
