A quick observation of quarterback Geno Smith and how he played in the New York Jets' 17-16 loss in Week 16:

Smith
Smith was afforded terrific pass protection, yet he managed to lead the offense to only one touchdown against the New England Patriots. He was pressured on only seven of 29 dropbacks, according to Pro Football Focus. It should've been a big day, but he completed 17 of 27 passes for 210 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.

What little pressure he felt wasn't handled well, as three of those seven pressures ended badly -- two sacks (both inside the Patriots' 25) and one interception. Unfortunately for the Jets, those three mistakes came in the final 16 minutes, costing them an upset bid.

In the NFL, there's no such thing as a perfect pocket on every play, but this was pretty darn close to ideal conditions for a quarterback.

In the finale, Smith returns home to face the Miami Dolphins. Predicting this game is almost impossible. He played one of his better games last season in Miami, also in Week 17, but he was relegated to handing off in the meeting earlier this month. Concerned about turnovers, the coaching staff cooked up one of the most conservative game plans in recent memory, limiting Smith to eight pass attempts before the final drive.

The Jets almost won, blowing a late chance.

The pass protection was great. Not only that, but like Tenn. The Pats often had no deep Safeties, bringing 9 men into the box to stop the run, challenging Smith to throw up field. Still not a very impressive game from Smith
