PFT -- Ever since the Jets used their franchise tag on defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson this offseason, there have been musings about the possibility that they would trade him to another team rather than negotiate a long-term contract.
They may not wind up working out a deal that keeps Wilkerson on the team beyond this season, but it doesn’t look like they’ll be trading him away either. General Manager Mike Maccagnan said last week that the Jets are not “actively shopping” Wilkerson and Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that teams approaching the Jets about a trade have failed to find any traction.
Per Rapoport, the Jets have “fielded calls” about Wilkerson without generating much action. There’s no word on what teams may be willing to offer or what the Jets are looking for in terms of compensation, but a trade is now “viewed as unlikely.”
Wilkerson, who is recovering from a Week 17 broken leg, will make $15.7 million if he plays out the year under the terms of the franchise tag and has until July 15 to work out a longer deal with the Jets. If that should fail to come to fruition, Wilkerson would be a free agent again next offseason.
