The Jets' Ryan Fitzpatrick experiment should finally be over

New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick’s contract officially voids on Friday, Feb. 10, rendering him an unrestricted free agent at the start of the NFL league year, on March 9.

Though, while it’s a near certainty the franchise will move on from the veteran, their financial commitment to him is not over yet. According to Joel Corry of CBS Sports, the Jets will still carry a $5 million salary cap charge because of a bonus proration from Fitzpatrick’s 2017 contract year.

The quarterback’s second season with the Jets proved a serious decline from his first.

In 2015, Fitzpatrick established a franchise record when he threw 31 touchdowns, against just 15 interceptions and the Jets won 10 games. But in his second year, following a prolonged contract holdout last summer, he would account for the NFL’s worst passer rating, while his 17 intercepted passes helped the Jets achieve the league’s worst turnover differential (minus-23).

At the crack of midnight tonight lets all raise a glass to Fitz.... to cheer a great 2015 season and to cheer he won't be back after his terrible 2016 season

One of the more interesting stories of the coming off season is where Geno and Fitz end up

Anyone have a conjecture?

i think Fitz is out of the league next year. He always finds a way to become a starter. If he's on your team next year, odds are that the starter will get hurt!

I've heard it said that the two happiest days in a boat owner's life are the day he gets it and the day he gets rid of it.
We just had our second Ryan Fitzpatrick happy day.

I disagree, I think mac waited too long to give Fitz, a man with no other suitors, his ultimatum. Mac had nothing to lose by keeping his options open, but I think both sides were foolish to overlook the importance of your starting qb attending a full offseason.

At 12 million, he was a cheap investment to keep the teams best offense together, and we didn't pass on any other qb talent to sign Fitz.

Ultimately it was a low risk signing where we either kept the magic alive and redeemed that buffalo loss, or we got a great pick. We blew out buffalo and we have the sixth pick.

We clearly need a lot more pieces, and the stated goal is sustainable success.
