Ryan Hayes Scouting Report

Ryan is tall with good length. He has thick upper body, narrow from the waist down. He has good athleticism, with straight line speed. He is quick enough to be an effective blocker on second level. He shows enthusiasm for blocking small, quick guys. He shows ability to run feet after contact and finish blocks. Hayes has good lateral quickness. He should be an effective zone blocker.

Areas for Improvement

Ryan lacks aggression when pass blocking. He keeps hands low and lacks punch in pass sets. He opens up hips too quickly against pass rushers. He does not show consistent enough motor in finishing blocks. He plays high in the run game. He can get off balance when he chooses not to move his feet. He does not use hands effectively control defenders.

Ryan Hayes Career at Michigan

As a freshman, Ryan did not see action but as a sophomore he ppeared in 12 games along the offensive line and also contributed on special teams to earn his first varsity letter. Was Academic All-Big Ten honoree, Named Offensive Player of the Game for his performance against Middle Tennessee State (Aug. 31). Started at left tackle against Army (Sept. 7). Played both right and left tackle at Wisconsin (Sept. 21). Contributed on special teams against Ohio State (Nov. 30) and against Alabama (Jan. 1) in the Vrbo Citrus Bowl.

In 2020, started two games at left tackle to earn his second varsity letter. Started at left tackle against Michigan State (Oct. 31), at Minnesota (Oct. 24). Following year in 2021, started at left tackle 12 regular games and in the Big Ten Championship on (Dec 4) against Iowa.

Ryan Hayes NFL Draft Player Profile

Hayes has all the physical skills anyone might want in a tackle – length, size, power, quickness, etc. The mental aspects are where he struggles. Ryan will require some coaching, and not just a little. He needs to lower his pad level, especially in the run game, and he really needs to show more aggression on first-level blocks. For being such a big guy, he doesn’t blow people off the ball like he should. That’s a concern to me, but I think it has a lot to do with technique and a need to get into a college strength program.
