Start Bridgewater or Darnold?

Yeah because their opinions/visions have been so successful in the past.

Woody Johnson (on the advice of Casserly and Wolf) hired Mike Maccagnan. In the time he’s been here, he’s dumped “past their prime” veterans, acquired some good bargain FA’s like Decker, Beachum, Carpenter, Claiborne, Long, and Williamson. Traded a misfit defensive lineman for a 2nd round pick AND Kearse, drafted cornerstone players like Leo and Adams, and moved up to grab potentially the next franchise QB in Sam Darnold.

I would say Maccganan’s vision has been pretty successful.

It comes down to this for me: if we start Teddy, we might be a little better in the wins/losses category. This is presuming that Darnold will have the usual rookie moments. But anyone who’s honest about this roster has to admit that we’re not a serious playoff team. We could sneak into the playoffs if a lot of things go right, but nothing more than that.

If we go 7-9, 8-8, or 9-7 what’s the real benefit of that? We lose Bridgewater to FA when it’s clear that the future is all about Darnold. We probably miss the playoffs. Darnold doesn’t get valuable game experience. And we get the #15 overall draft pick instead of a top 7 pick.

Exactly. If the end goal is being a playoff team as quickly as possible, maybe go with Teddy.

If the end goal is to build toward a Super Bowl team, play Darnold.

Maccagnan hasn’t been perfect. Not too many GM’s have ever been. I think he’s made some common sense top 5 picks that weren’t too difficult. But he still made the right picks. I think he’s been very good in FA overall. If there’s a criticism to be made, I’d like to see more 3rd-6th round draft picks emerge. They take time to develop. But you have to get lucky with a Quincy Enunwa in the 6th round once in a while.

criticism i would add..

super reached on a QB in the 2nd who flopped historically badly..

one trick pony WR 2nd rounder washout..

lee might not get extended (rightfully so) without a strong year 4..

TE remains as much of an issue as when he got here..

the OL has never been properly addressed & neither has an edge rush..

bidded against himself with fitzpatrick..

Geno Smith was widely considered a 1st round draft pick until he started to slide a few months before the draft. Taking him in the 2nd wasn’t a reach. It was a gamble that didn’t pay off, but I recall quite a few people liking the spot he got picked at.

Stephen Hill was a terrible pick. No argument here. Major reach there.

Jury’s still out on Darron Lee. Agree that this is a big year for him. He has to be more of an impact player.

Tight end and o-line? Well, you can’t reshape an entire team in four drafts. Every GM misses on plenty of their draft picks. Even the Packers, Eagles, and Patriots. Nobody talks about the epic misses by the Patriots in the draft over the last 10 years because they’ve been winning SB’s with Brady and Belichick.

Fitzpatrick was coming off a very good year and was looking for a multi year extension. And the Jets didn’t have much in the way of an alternative. Maccagnan stuck to his guns and offered a 1 year deal. Thank God for that after Fitz stunk up the joint. Macc should be given credit for that move.
