Assuming we keep and not trade the #6 pick in the First Round , and we select the best Defensive Player on the board … ..

When our second round pick (# 37 )comes up and both of these guys are still on the board Todd Gurley (RB) and Dorial Green-Beckham (WR) … who would your pick? (Both are projected to be picked in the 35-42 range)

Your scenario could actually happen. It would be an extremely good dilemma for the Jets to be in. Both probably have top 10 talent and for various reasons are at the top of the 2nd round. Oh happy days.

I would probably have to go with Gurley. Beckham's off field issues worry more then Gurley's knee. Either way I would be a happy camper

Gurley and here's why.

DGB is raw. It's been about a year and a half since he's played a game, and he was thought to be a raw WR even before that. Couple that with the reputation he has for picking up the offense very slowly (they had to simplify things for him at Mizzou, just like Vince Young with Texas). So you have a raw player, who's rusty, and hasn't played a game in about 2 years, is slow in picking up the playbook, making the jump to the NFL. By the time he is up to speed and we got our ROI back on the kid, he would be in his contract year and it would cost a fortune to keep.

Gurley on the other hand is ready to contribute ASAP, even with the shaky knee. He's a great, humble, and hard working kid who will give an ROI almost immediately.

Now who will have the longer career and probably better overall career? DGB. But I think he is 3 years away from being a dominant player, whereas Gurley is that day 1.

With all that said, if you could guarantee me Duke Johnson is there in round 3 then it's DGB in a heartbeat.

1) Beasley
2) DGB
3) Duke Johnson

Ya, it goes that way and we won the draft. This boy would be doing some cartwheels.

my guess is both are off the board when we pick in the 2nd, but if your scenario plays out, i take gurley. we have more of a need for a RB (ivory and powell are both FAs after this year) and DGB could be the next josh gordon. not that i am taking him off my draft board, but gurley is my top choice of pretty much anyone at the top of the 2nd (assuming he's not taken earlier)

I agree. If we take a defensive player with our first round pick, and then these guys are available to us during our second pick, we have made out like bandits.

Either one I am happy with but I think Gurley can help this team more. The complete running back we need.

Beckham's off field issues worry me a bit too

I pass on both. DGB's too big of a risk for a new GM to take on. As for Gurley, another big risk. Didn't we just run Idzik out of town in part that he took too many gambles on players with an injury history?

Both guys represent huge boom or bust due to their backgrounds. I don't see either one as viable. Many more options out there with the #5 pick in the 2nd round. I don't believe the team has been linked to either of these two to this point.

DGB and here is why...

He won't be forced to be "the guy" right away so he will have time to learn.

RBs are way easier to find and replace then WRs.

Its that simple.

I would take DGB id rather have a perfectly healthy monster WR like him..than a RB coming off a big injury..you see what ended up with Lattimore unfortunately for the kid.....and I think a WR can dominate the game more than a RB who is more OL dependent and any good RB can run behind a good OL

If Gurley is healthy he can come in and start from day one.
I'd be ecstatic if we chose him with our 2nd pick.
He has a rare combination of speed and power; he is very difficult to tackle and has nice vision.

A RB is dependent on a good OL.

A WR is dependent on a good QB.

I'm taking Gurley 10 out of 10 times . . .

I doubt either one makes it out of the 1st round, but gimme Gurley all day long

Some on here on underestimating what a huge jerk Beckham is or how lazy he is

Gurley

His only problem is an injury, but ACL's are not the career threatening or even career damaging injuries they used to be, nowadays you fix them up and a year later the player is like new, sort of like the advancement in Tommy John surgery in baseball, if the pitcher is young he comes back throwing just as hard as he did before the injury, sometimes even harder.

So the ACL doesn't scare me off with Gurley and before he got hurt he was the best combination of size, speed, power and agility I had seen in college in quite some time, reminded me a little bit of Adrian Peterson at Oklahoma. I don't anticipate he will fall to the 2nd RD, frankly I'll be shocked if he does, but if he's there at 37 I would take him in a minute.

As for DGB, his problems are a million times more severe in my view. Multiple drug offenses and a serious domestic violence on his rap sheet as well. Heretofore the dude has been a straight-up thug and that kind of guy doesn't usually change his stripes unless he has some kind of religious epiphany. And lastly, for all of his physical attributes and comparisons to Calvin Johnson, he wasn't exactly a dominant player even before he got kicked off the team at Missouri.

Granted there's a huge upside with DGB, that kind of size and speed is rare, but IMO there's a huge upside with Gurley too, he could be a guy who challenges 2000 Yards in a single season, and he's far less risky than DGB.

I didnt read a single response and scrolled down till I could find your name knowing you loved both prospects...

This was an awesome breakdown and I really want to say kudos for the cool comparison and background on each player. I think what you said is a very good reason to grab Gurley.

What do you think about the devil's advocate side that runningbacks are a dime a dozen, 6'6 230 lbs WRs are a rare breed and redzone nightmare that would seem to be coming into a perfect mentoring opportunity with Decker and Marshall who are also big WRs that likely had to make similar challenging transitions from their college systems to the complexities of NFL offenses?
