Tre Sterling Scouting ReportTre has strong hands to make plays on the ball, effective blitzer who shows well-coached technique and awareness. He is a tough and scrappy with forceful nature to be physical at all levels of the field. Has good bulk on his frame to be aggressive in run support. Tre has good speed in pursuit with the chase skills to track down the ballcarrier. He gives up his body in run support with a very good closing burst. Tre closes to the ball quite well and possesses the hands to snatch throws away from his frame. He flashes some physicality as a hitter. Tre has very good instincts and anticipation reads and reacts with discipline. Dangerous with the ball in his hands.

Areas for ImprovementSterling has tense ankles and hips with choppy footwork when attempting to redirect and doesn't always look natural changing directions. He is inconsistent getting off of blocks. Can be a step slow to react when a quarterback comes back to his side of the field late in progression. Tre needs to tighten his angles in pursuit. Needs to show better tackling technique to consistently finish.

Tre Sterling Career at SchoolTre Sterling played for coach John Settle at Sunnyvale, playing a big role on both sides of the ball. Helped guide his team to an 11-1 record as a senior, rushing for 2,081 yards (10.3 yards per carry) and 31 touchdowns with 10 100-yard rushing games on offense while accounting for 63 total tackles, 40 solo stops, nine tackles for loss, four interceptions, one pass break up, five forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries on defense. Also handled all the punting duties with an average of 36.6 yards and added 300 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 21 receptions, 114 kickoff return yards on three returns (38.0 avg.) and 70 punt return yards on three returns (23.3 avg.). Scored 37 total touchdowns his last season, scoring via rush, reception, fumble return, interception return and punt return. As a true freshman, Tre redshirted. As a redshirt freshman in 2018, he played in every game with the bulk of his contributions coming on special teams. He had two tackles on the year both on kickoffs during the victory over Missour in the Liberty Bowl. As a redshirt sophomore entered the season as a relative unknown with only two career tackles to his name, but established himself as one of the Cowboys’ top defensive players. An honorable mention All-Big 12 selection by the league’s coaches. A starter in 11 of the 12 games in which he played, and the only one he didn’t start came as a result of having to sit out the first half of the Texas A&M game after being penalized for targeting in the second half of the previous contest. Fourth on the team with 70 tackles. Second on the team with eight pass breakups. An honorable mention All-Big 12 selection by the league’s coaches who was one of OSU’s biggest playmakers throughout the year. Finished the season ranked No. 1 in the Big 12 and No. 12 in the FBS with two fumble recoveries, and his 5.1 solo tackles per game ranked No. 2 in the Big 12 and No. 40 in the FBS. Led the team with 12.0 tackles for loss on the season - 3.5 more than any other player. Finished the year as the team’s third-leading tackler with 74 on the season, behind only linebackers Malcolm Rodriguez and Amen Ogbongbemiga. His 51 solo stops tied for the second-most on the team and his two interceptions tied for the team lead with safety Kolby Harvell-Peel. Also credited with four pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, a quarterback hurry and half a sack.

Tre Sterling NFL Draft Player ProfileA strong frame that is well put together and compact. Smart player that does a good job with his eye discipline reading routes and diagnosing run or pass. At his best when he is used as an underneath defender where he can play curl/flat, hook/curl, or play a robber where he can read the quarterback. A strong tackler when in closed space, showing the strength to finish tackles on contact.
