Robert Saleh’s first Jets coaching staff is nearly filled out, but there is still a chance that two coaches from his predecessors’ staffs remain with New York.
Saleh said Thursday that he has been fielding calls on retaining special teams coach Brant Boyer and defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson, per The Athletic’s Connor Hughes. No decision has been made on either’s future with the organization.
Boyer has been with New York since 2016, leaving the Colts to join Todd Bowles’ staff as special teams coordinator. Adam Gase elected to retain Boyer upon his hiring in 2019 and the move paid dividends, as special teams have been arguably the Jets’ biggest strength the last two seasons.
Braden Mann shined under Boyer’s watch in 2020, averaging 43.9 yards per punt while downing opponents inside their own 20-yard line 19 times. He also made a pair of key open-field tackles on punt returns — one of which helped the Jets secure their first win of the season against the Rams in Week 15.
If retained by Saleh, Boyer would be the first Jets special teams coach to work under three separate coaching regimes since Mike Westhoff worked for Herm Edwards, Eric Mangini and Rex Ryan from 2001-2012.
Wilson joined the Jets in 2017 as defensive backs coach after a two-year stint working for the Rams in the same role. The 38-year-old added passing game coordinator to his title upon Gase’s arrival, but New York’s secondary turned in mixed results under Wilson’s tutelage, ranking 16th against the pass in 2019 and 27th in 2020.
The Jets announced 16 additions to Saleh’s coaching staff Thursday, including offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur and defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich.
