The SOJ comment refers to the tendency of some fans to jump all over the front office of this team every chance they can. So if the Giants make a mistake or a questionable decision, they’re off the hook because of more success they’ve had. But if the Jets do something the fans and/or media don’t like, start the circus music and don’t hold back! Incompetence, LOL, SOJ.

I partially blame the beat writers for it. Cimini and Mehta have been instigators for years, constantly bringing up that stupid “Buttfumble” play as a microcosm of the supposed ineptitude of this team. (If the Giants had done that, you’d never hear about it again). Or the draft. They act like we’re the only ones who miss on first round picks. Every team misses on draft picks and FA’s from time to time. But it gets magnified because it’s the Jets, and people cannot look past 1995-96 Kotite era, paper bags over the heads at the Meadowlands, etc.

At some point, despite the efforts at ESPN and the Daily News, we have to move on from this characterization and realize that this team isn’t the joke some claim it is. Yes there have been bad years, but there’s also been very good years and a lot of mediocrity. Hardly the 1-15 SOJ team some just can’t get away from.
Blind, believe me, I know that much of what you said above is true, and unfair, but I'm telling you this SOJ narrative will not go away until this team breaks the drought like the NY Rangers, Rex Sox, Cubs etc. When you go 50 Years without winning, you are going to be treated like a perennial loser and bumbling idiots. There's only one way to end that narrative ... win a championship.

Every one of the teams I mentioned lived with a similar narrative until they won, then, POOF!!!, that narrative was gone.

I guess it’s a matter of interpretation. For a long time, the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox couldn’t win a championship. But even as a Yankees fan, I never said “the Sox are a joke of an organization”. To the contrary, I’ve always viewed the Red Sox as a great organization who’ve had many winning seasons even during the drought. (It pains me to admit that, of course).

If you’re basing it solely on SB wins, then yes, having 1 ring in our history is pretty bad. But I look at more than that in evaluating a franchise. I was pretty fired up watching the AFC Championship games in 1998, 2009, and 2010. Those were good moments to be a Jets fan, even though we lost.

The problem is, there are other franchises with longer droughts. The Rams last won a title in 1951. The Browns in 1964.

The Vikings, Bills, Chargers, and Oilers/Titans have been around as long as the Jets and have no titles.

But it's LOLJets and SOJ. This speaks to a point I made in another thread that the Jets are disproportionately mocked by the national media because they're a New York team, and by the local media because the Giants are the establishment team.

The Rams went to two SB's with Kurt Warner and won one.

The Browns, most of the country views them as one of the worst franchises in all of sports.

The Vikings and Bills didn't win championships, granted, but the Bills went to an unprecedented four SB's in a row and I think the Vikings went to three in a row, or three in four years, something like that, so there was a time when they were by far the most dominant team in the NFC for an extended period of time, and the Bills were the most dominant team in the AFC for an extended period of time.

The Oilers had a great team in the 70's and most people realize their bad luck was having to play arguably the greatest dynasty in NFL history like three years in a row in the AFC Title Game, a team that was like an all-star team in the 70's and probably sent more players to the HOF than any other NFL dynasty, then they barely lost a SB when Dyson was tackled at the one inch line, probably the most dramatic defensive play in NFL history with the possible exception of Malcolm Butler's INT.

Its not only that the Jets haven't won a SB in fifty years, sack ... its that they haven't even played in a SB in fifty years too ... thats what really adds insult to injury.

The Rams will have the best defense in the NFL with all the moves they have made. They are going for it before their talented rookie contracts come due. At least they are trying.

I agree with the points you make about most of this. However, if we are going to hold up the Oilers' success in the 70s, then you have to look at the Jets in 1998 and in 2009-10. Neither the Oilers nor the Jets made the Super Bowl, but both had good runs.

And I forgot about the Rams winning a SB, so that is on me. An unforced error.
