After deciding on Muhammad Wilkerson and Damon Harrison the Jets will have to reconfigure the rest of the front seven. Bringing back Wilkerson via the franchise tag is the assumed play by majority of the media around the league. Opening a question could they tag him and trade him, anything is possible. Damon Harrison prior to the end of the season was on the hook to leave in free agency but now that the cap has been projected around $155 million would increase an additional $12 million for Mike Maccagnan and the Jets front office to manipulate.

After those two, Sheldon Richardson and Leonard Williams are more than likely locks for the active 53 but there are some other decisions on the depth across the line. Last year rookie Deon Simon and third year defensive lineman addition Mike Catapano look to be a part of the plans moving forward. Will the Jets retain either or both veteran defensive linemen Leger Douzable and/or Stephen Bowen this off season. Both veterans look to be affordable options heading into free agency.

Defensive line in the recent years has been the backbone of Green & White's defense only to feel the pressure from a lack luster linebacker core. After veterans and lifer middle backer David Harris the Jets have had trouble stabilizing a consistent pass rush. Calvin Pace was a solid core player that benefited from the defensive line occupying multiple bodies up front allowing the veterans to take advantage.

Lorenzo Mauldin IV looks to continue off a strong second half of his rookie campaign. Trevor Reilly has good speed but a lousy first step, maybe with the proper training this off season he will continue to develop. The Jets signed Canadian football league standout Freddie Bishop whom looks to compete for a roster spot and could replace Calvin Pace if he decides he is calling it a career. Other possibilities like Julian Howsare, Deon Barnes, Josh Martin and/or Julian Stanford could be in the mix to add to this developing position.

Word is Erin Henderson started new contract talks but there is no definite resolution on an extension. Last years rookie undrafted free agent middle linebacker Taiwan Jones looks to be one of two or three options as depth moving forward. Will the Jets front office extend an offer to re-sign Jamari Lattimore? Could David Harris and Erin Henderson be the starters for 2016?

Kind of an interesting outlook, on what the front seven could look like in 2016:

  • ROLB: Lorenzo Mauldin IV
  • MLB: David Harris
  • WLB: Erin Henderson
  • LOLB: Julian Stanford

  • LE: Muhammad Wilkerson/Leonard Williams
  • NT: Damon Harrison/Leonard Williams
  • DT: Sheldon Richardson/Leonard Williams

For me this could be a scary lineup in itself. Stanford isn't a slouch and both Harris and Henderson could stabilize the inside in both the pass or the run. Mauldin showed he is a capable option behind a fearsome foursome even if the Jets do part ways with one of the capable starting four defensive lineman up front it still could be a reckless and productive front seven with the right game plan. This would allow the team to develop role players to be future starters meaning they don't necessarily have to draft these positions in the first few rounds.

Deion Barnes de/lb undrafted out of Penn St. could be a dark horse next year. Maybe not full time starter but a situational pass rusher. I thought he was very active last preseason. Hopefully a full season with the Jets( practice squad) and a productive offf season, gaining some strength will make this player a find. The same can be said for Taiwon Jones and Wes Saxton. These are the three undrafted players i'm looking forward to seeing next year.

Deion Barnes will need to be more consistent with his hand technique and motor when he gets his opportunities otherwise he could see another season start on the practice squad. I believe he has improved his functional strength this past season, which is a good sign.

As for Taiwan Jones, I really do believe he will be a situational role player behind David Harris and should see plenty of time on special teams to further develop while getting game time.

With Quincy Enunwa our glorified H Back, Wes Saxton has the same size and length as Enunwa with more raw athleticism so we will see if Wes puts things together this off season.
