New York Jets guard Willie Colon is contemplating retirement, according to ESPN New York's Rich Cimini.
"I'm on the fence," Colon told ESPN New York 98.7 FM. "I still haven't decided if I'm gonna go or not go. At this point, I'm trying to enjoy the couch and kicking my dog every morning. ... I don't want to rush it."

Colon also told ESPN Radio that if QB Ryan Fitzpatrick doesn't return, then he would like to see Geno Smith get another shot.
Colon, 32, was limited to six games last season for the Jets after he played all 16 games with New York in 2013 and 2014. Prior to joining New York, he was with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2006 to 2012.

I get the sense Colon doesn't actually want to retire, but perhaps isn't getting much interest in the open market. Ordinarily, he might be better served waiting until training camp when teams with injury issues will appreciate the chance to bring aboard such an experienced player. However, with a potential future in broadcasting and some local experience in that area, his preference would probably be to stay in New York if at all possible.

Colon played pretty well at the start of the season, but hurt his knee in Week 3 and struggled after he returned. If fully healthy, I'd consider him a replacement-level player at worst, but how long can he be expected to stay injury-free?
As for his comments on Smith, I'm not sure what the team is thinking, even though GM Mike Maccagnan reiterated yesterday that the Jets have faith in him. However, it is interesting to hear Smith starting to get some support from players who have played with him.

Colon could provide veteran depth and leadership and the occasional spot start, but as all Jets fans know by now the false start penalties and other errors might make his future with the Jets up in the air. The Jets might want Colon back, but it could be contingent on what else they do in free agency and, more importantly at this point, the 2016 NFL Draft. I am not opposed to Colon coming back with the Jets, but any assurances of him making it out of camp or as a starter can't be guaranteed.

I've always loved Colon's attitude. Honestly, I think this team would be in much better shape and win a lot more games if every player maintained the same no excuse attitude as Colon. With that said, Colon's body is just beginning to betray him too much. I loved the progress that Brian Winters made as the season wore on and I believe we'll be fine with or without Colon. The Jets big problem along the OL IMO is at Tackle.

If I'm Mac I go into 2016 with Winters as the penciled in as the starter (subject to change if his performance is poor) and I sign another Guard to serve as depth and spell Winters and Carpenter.

Wow I am surprised at this........I thought he retired a couple of years ago:global (33):

That being said we do need a live wire on that line. But one that keep the flags in the refs pocket

i believe the 180° colon did on smith speaks for itself.. "yeah, i didn't want to wait about 3 more seconds for you to throw the ball, (in contrast to fitzpatrick) but all is forgiven because it no longer makes me look like a lousy OL & effect my money.."

welcome to the world of being an NFL talking head.. you are off to a promising start.....

I think he sewed his oats when he got that personal foul being a visitor on our sideline after he was placed on injured reserve, now go eat those oats you sewed and leave us alone!
