Zachary Thomas Scouting Report

Zachary gets everything out of his adequate size and frame with good length. Added bulk to his frame and flashes functional strength to get a good push in the run game. He dips shoulder and moves his feet to get outside leverage when needed. Strong and low coming out of his stance, effective in short-yardage situations.

Thomas has good natural athleticism, knee bend and fluid lateral movement to mirror college defensive ends. He plays with appropriate wide base and intelligence, instincts and agility to seal the edge. Aggressive extending with power to punch and looks comfortable in space.

Zachary anchors against larger defenders in the middle; resets hands to maintain distance. Athletic enough to help on nose tackle then pick up twist or late blitzer. Mirrors quick interior rushers. Looks to help the center when uncovered.

Areas for Improvement

Thomas loses leverage battles and plays with high pad level. Can be late off the snap. He limits ability to mirror by leaning forward with his upper body and neglecting his lower body. Not strong enough and remains rough around the edges. He's athletic and a pure left tackle whose high-hipped frame and waist bending might be exposed against pro pass rushers.

Thomas is not a natural knee-bender and gets too upright. Needs to play with better leverage and stay balanced through contact. He is not physically imposing and has average overall strength. Upper body gets over his feet too often and he easily loses his balance.

Zachary Thomas Career at School

A local lineman out of Carlsbad High School who was in the mix for playing time in 2018 after working as a reserve in 2017. Has solid technique. Entered 2018 as the projected starting right tackle, but can also play guar. Tore his ACL in the third game of the 2018 season (his second straight start) and missed all of the 2019 spring season. Started 2019 as the backup left tackle, but became the starting right tackle five games into the season. Enters his final campaign as the projected starting left tackle after starting the last 17 games at right tackle.

Zachary Thomas NFL Draft Player Profile

A versatile offensive lineman that offers competitive toughness and good football intelligence. He has played the most on the outside as a tackle, while his overview suggests he would thrive inside at the next level. He has good natural athleticism but is inconsistent with pad level.
