Willie Colon - Breaking down the Jets QB Situation on NFL Radio

I don't know if anyone else listened to him as he was talking on NFL Radio but here was his simple breakdown.

McCown - Repsected in the locker room. Here for his veteran presence. Will only start for a little bit and Jets ahve to turn to one of the young guys this season. Sonner rather than later

Petty - Clearly the #2 QB. Possibly should be the starter. Well respected in the locker room. Vets are saying when he plays with the 1's he looks good. Looks a little rough with the 3's but thats not on him. He had high praise for him likes his development. A little miffed as to why he was buried both last camp and this camp in his development. Loves the kids moxy and grit

Hackenberg - Kid developed leaps and bound compared to last summer. Long way still to go.. Only 22 and the criticism on him is not on him it's on where he was picked but thinks the kid has the tools and needs to keep developing and patience is needed.

Draft - Knows QB will be taken next years. Duh!!

Reading between the lines sounded like he clearly thinks the Jets should be starting Petty. Also seemed to be still high on Hack for the future.

I think Colon is actually being kind? You have to remember Colon played for the Jets and he's a NY guy? He paints a brighter picture but this is complete sh*t on full display. Hack is garbage. This kid is a 100% bust and I have no doubt about that. Listen, this kid played in a division 1 pro style offense at a very highly thought of school. TWO years into his development, he cannot perform the most menial of QB tasks.

In contrast, Mark Sanchez started a handful of games and even he (being as bad as he was) was still WAY more advanced in his knowledge of QB 101. He could make some throws and execute what the coaches were calling for plays. He had some pocket awareness and knew when to commit to running for a 1st down. He did a decent job of protecting the football. At least when he was a rookie, he knew enough about these things.

Hack knew NOTHING about those things even in training camp, his 2nd since being drafted. He randomly was horribly inaccurate on 5 yard outs. He never even took a chance downfield in the 1st preseason game. Whether or not that was the CS handcuffing him is irrelevant, it still does not reflect well on the kid. Since he or the CS decided to take more chances downfield he was subject to TWO pick 6's. This, against NFL players that were NOT strategizing at all. There was no strategy or wrinkles in the defense designed to throw Hack off what he does well.

While we're on the subject what does Hack do well? Is there anything any fan/spectator can point to and say, "This is what Hack does well as a QB. This is what the OC and CS should make as a major part of the offense because it puts Hack in a position to do what he does best"?

I don't think anyone has a good, legitimate answer for that? At least with Sanchez we knew almost immediately that he was pretty good executing play action and tended to throw the ball well on roll outs, while he was running he still maintained a strong arm and could throw with decent accuracy?

Maybe he is but I will say the tone of his voice when he spoke about Petty sounded like he was a true believer and not feeding us any lip service.

IMHO only a fool would not play petty ...and we have a winner - TB, enough said.

As much as I don't believe TB is a real HC, I also do not believe he is a fool. A little naïve from time to time, but certainly not a fool. Petty WILL play this season. He WILL get extensive time as the starter.

I sure hope so because there is nothing about Hack that says he can even stay in this league let alone be productive. I believe once the Jets cut him he will never play again. Good thing is McCown is awful and he will take off and run so he will take some hits. Will Petty take advantage of the opportunity is the question?

Yeah, well you are most certainly seeing things the way I do? I see a big, fat NOTHING in Hack. He looks like Ryan Leaf on the football field less the SFB attitude. The Hack drafting will ultimately not reflect well on Mac. What he was thinking I will never know??

Well, the way I see it is even if Toilet is dumb enough to think Petty can learn from the bench, that will not happen. This OL is the very worst OL I have ever seen the Jets have? They had some bad ones in the 80's. I still think that was what f*cked up Kenny O'Brien. He was a great QB prior to getting his brains scrambled.

So inevitably due to:

1) McCown's playing style. He plays a lot like Fitz. He dives head first. He isn't afraid to run for a 1st down. A real scrappy player. But that makes him much more vulnerable to injury? In fact, take a look see at the Jets 2015 opener against the Browns? Toilets first game as Jets HC. Pay special attention to McCown running for the end zone.

2) This OL will inevitably get McCown injured. They are so bad, they routinely miss blocking assignments and when the play is over they are pointing fingers at each other? In other words, they have a serious lack of talent and chemistry, cohesion. They are all a bunch of barely NFL talent acting as individuals.

So after considering that I have no doubt that ALL of the Jets QB's will be the starter at some point or another........

Honestly the last 2 pre-seasons Petty has played as well as any hyped rookie QB that has come out in the last 2 drafts against the same 2's, 3's and cut guys... Yet Petty is completely overlooked as a QB developing because of how Sh***y the Jets have handled him and the QB's in general since Chad Pennington. Can you imagine where Petty would be if the Jets went all in on him from day 1. Kid had been putting in the work and developing himself and has improved greatly from his first training camp till now... The Jets need to recognize it and fast. Go all in on him and develop this Kid... He has the talent, the arm, the smarts, the moxy and everything you want in a QB.... Except a damn FO and CS that will not put their part of the deal in drafting him in, and developing him. the window will now be super small but call me crazy but I believe if the Jets get their head out of their a$$ and run with Petty he will be the QB we need and we want.

I sure hope so because I believe in Petty also. He is the first QB we have had in years that has progressed every year especially coming from the offense he came from. We need to use this year to see if he can be the future. If not at least we tried. He will develop somewhere. Being a local kid to me from outside Dallas, I have an agenda in cheering for him.

The problem is the Jets haven't tried... If they truly developed him the right way... Geno would have been cut before training camp last year. Petty would have been the back up from the get go....More reps, more coaching etc... It's what they should have done... And quite frankly it would have helped Hack too..... Not sure Hack would have been better but he would have had more time in the right circumstances to show if he belongs... Petty has shown he does.
