Update: Baker Mayfield wins the Heisman

Is there any doubt at this juncture that he wins the Heisman? Was already considered to be leading the race before last weekend and threw for over 600 yards against OK ST.

I might end up regretting this limb I'm going out on, but this is the guy I want as the Jets QB if Rosen is beyond Mac's reach? The height thing for me is irrelevant. Mayfield already has some pretty massive trees to see over. I think he'll persevere in the pros.

The biggest blip at this point is that there's controversy about whether he'll actually go in the 1st round? I can't imagine him going any lower than late in the 1st round.

If I had to predict where the Jets will be picking, I figure we'll be picking somewhere in the 10 to 15 range? If that's the case, Mayfield would probably be good value in that range or even possibly trading down a few slots?

So this thread was just meant to reignite the debate. Do you think Mac has the cahonas to trade up and go after someone like Rosen? Now that SF traded for Garrapolo I figure there out of the QB market? So maybe the 1st pick is for sale?

Or does Mac sit tight and wait for someone like Mayfield to fall in his lap?

I don't want it to happen either, but I get the feeling that Mac is going to make a massive offer to Cousins. I just have a feeling that he loves the guy, had interest in 2015 that was real and legitimate, and seeing that we will likely have upward of 90MM in cap room to spend I can see him going for cousins.

Again, I don't want this to happen. I would honestly prefer going after a guy like Alex Smith and drafting Baker Mayfield to sit behind him for a bit while we spend all our FA money on solidifying the OL and running game. This is just how I see it playing out.

Mayfield is skyrocketing up the draft.... He is going Top 10 as of now IMO

I hadn't heard that? Latest I had heard was he could very well go in the 2nd round? If he does go there, I figure the draft pick is a no brainer, definitely getting good value in the 2nd round? But even if we took at say between 10 and 15 (which is approximately where I see the Jets picking), I would still think that's good value............

Quite a few articles talking about him going in the first... But top 10 comment is my opinion.

No way do I pick this douche. Johnny Maziel 2.0. He is immature and a prick. His stats are pumped up because he plays shitty defenses in Big 12.

I understand your reservations about the guy. I saw his bad conduct this last weekend also. But like has been pointed out by many in those college shows..... Mayfield is an overly emotional guy. His emotions are on full display on his shirt sleeve. He CARES. He also happens to play for the 4th ranked overall Oklahoma Sooners, a BIG TIME college football team that is almost always in national championship contention. The Sooners figure to make the college football playoff due in large part because of Baker Mayfield and what he's managed to do on the football field. The camera is ALWAYS on him. There isn't a second that goes bye where there isn't a camera trained on him. He's as big of a name in college football as there is today. MANY QB's in college football feel the same way he does and probably say the very same things he does, however, they do not have to worry about cameras catching their every word uttered.

I'm not saying I condone his conduct. He's a senior and he should be more mature, but there is a part of me that thinks his confidence, arrogance will come in handy in NY. All in all, I don't have a problem with it and I would definitely take him in the draft. He's too good of a talent to pass up..............

Guaranteed he will fail in NY if he acts like that in the NFL. Maybe as a 2nd round pick, but definitely not if the Jets get a top 10 pick. Doing something once would be excusable, but he has had multiple issues which are similar to Manziel.

Who's to say he will act like that in the NFL? Maybe he grows up because he's forced to? And I never mentioned taking him top 10. And you're way off the mark with the Manziel comparisons. Mayfield got arrested ONCE for public intoxication in which he paid his dues already. Manziel is an ALCOHOLIC and that is actually a whole lot worse. He never took the game seriously. Mayfield definitely takes the game far more seriously than Manziel did.........

The kid plays with fire and passion. And because Manziel was a failure doesn't equate Mayfield being a failure because they seem similar in attitude. There is a fine line with playing with passion and fire or juts being immature and arrogant in the wrong way... I'll take my chances on Mayfield, this kid is a QB. So I agree with Mainejet here. Manziel didn't love the game he loved the fame.... Mayfield loves the game.

He is a complete arrogant prick!! I want a QB that can stay calm and be a leader. His "passion" won't work in the NFL. He will get eaten alive with that attitude.

Completely agree. There is no comparison between Mayfield and Manziel. That said, I would not use a top 15 pick on him unless he explodes and leads Oklahoma to the championship. My druther would be to sign Alex Smith (despite how he played yesterdsay) and draft a guy like Mayfiled or Clayton Thornton from Northwestern in round 2. With round 1, the other round 2 pick and round 3, I think Mac goes for a CB, OLB, WR and/or an OL/C.

As far as the cap is concerned I would like to see Mac sign Kony Ealy and ASJ with some of that money and get Mo to renegotiate his massive deal. That would still leave plenty of $$ for a CB, RB (Isiaih Crowell?), WR (Alshon Jeffrey?) and an offensive lineman or two. It will be interesting to see if Mac does what the Browns did last year and in essence 'buy' another second round pick by trading for an overpriced vet (e.g., Osweiler) and then cutting him. Three second round picks would be awfully nice.

I'm warming up to Mayfield as I've seen him a few times this year. I've been impressed with what he does with regards to his accuracy (+ 70%), 4 year production (122 TD's) and ability of throwing on the run. I also read his teammates would go to war with him as their leader. That stuff he pulled on Saturday doesn't bother me all that much. They are still 20 years old.

I also don't see him as a Johnny Manziel who was a bit more frail body type and was in it for the money only. You can see Baker just loves the game. He's not ideal with his height but neither was Brees or Wilson who have greatly excelled in the NFL. However, Baker does look like he's pretty well built even for his size. If he's there when we pick probably between 10-15 I would probably be getting excited going into 2018... Admittedly, maybe my overwhelming desire for a Franchise QB the last 40+ years is overtaking me..

Mayfield's actions on Saturday would not deter me from drafting him. Isn't Brady often highly emotional on the sideline? In fact, if memory serves me correctly, didn't Brady get after it in a somewhat similar vein against the Jets a couple of years ago? It might have been the genesis of Cromartie calling Brady an a-hole. To be clear, I'm not advocating behavior such as Mayfield demonstrated, but I'd rather have that behavior than the indifferent persona all too often demonstrated by a QB like Jay Cutler. Having said all this, I would prefer a taller QB, but Russel Wilson has shown that a QB shorter than 6 feet can win a super bowl. Still the overwhelming majority of super bowls have been won by QBs who are 6'2' and taller. It will be interesting to see what Mayfield's true height is when he gets to the scouting combine. I wonder where he stands, literally, compared to Wilson and Drew Brees.

The odds are much more in favor of you being correct? This is a pretty rickety branch I find myself on? It could snap at any time in the form of Mayfield being another Geno Smith. However, I know this rebuild that Mac is doing will NEVER result in a SB unless he finds a franchise QB. Without that we're FUCKED. Therefore, we MUST take a chance on a franchise QB and I don't believe there's ever been a better potential guy staring us in the face and well within our grasp of obtaining? We probably won't even need to trade up to get him? He'll probably be great value even at 10-15. Which is where I figure the Jets will end up picking..........
