What If

Crazy thought.....

What if the Jets are thinking that they will not draft a QB and will not get one in free agency. What if the Jets actually think Hack or Petty will be QB in 2018.

Hear me out....

Our roster is in transition. We have some talent. But lets be real - the line, the run game, and the WR's are not exactly something that will make it easy for a rookie. Not to mention we are installing a new offense this year.

What if the Jets intend on developing and installing 2017 and in 2018 they exclusively draft OL, WR, and RB while all the other teams have a feeding frenzy on QB's in the first and second rounds?

It certainly would put whoever is going to start next season in the best situtation to succeed. If you figure with all the FA cash we have and the draft picks we should be able to build a team around Petty or Hack whoever wins out. Not to mention it will be year two of the offense from Morton.

Think about this, both rookies had to start over learning yet another NFL offense this season. I got to imagine thats hard to do even when you have a decent team. If I look at the Rams and Goff, its a good comparison. Last year Goff was terrible. This year with a sensible offense and play makers all around him he is succeeding. If we look back at Geno Smith (mediocre) he would of been serviceable if he has consistency and talent around him (Idzik deprived him of talent), woody deprived him of consistency. Sanchez same issue (by year 3) new OC, (32-37 year old) WR's, and a weaker O-line with no run game (LT was old by then)...

Its sound less crazy as I write it. But seriously what if while everyone thinks the Jets are in the QB market - the Jets actually are not. Does anyone actually believe Petty wouldnt be successful on the Rams this season with those WR's, Todd Gurley, and the O-Line they have?

This is all a possibility and something the Jets would definitely do but I hope they don't. I don't think it would be the right or wise decision. True franchise QB's don't grow on trees and they are slim pickings, so you have to grab them when they are there to get!!! The Jets like all other teams without a QB are desperately looking for one and should know a true franchise guy can make all the difference. The difference in a Colts team going 3-13 without Luck and 11-5 with him. The difference in the same team doing that with P. Manning or the Packers going 5-11 without Rodgers and 12-4 with him. Look at the Texans without D. Watson and with him. They could been fighting for a wild-card spot with him but their looking at a 5-11 record without him. Not saying the Jets can draft a guy and they will go 11-5 instantly but they will have a better record then this year, if that QB is truly a franchise guy.

Point being, when you have the opportunity to draft a franchise QB, you have to take him and can't pass it up. The Jets have passed to many franchise QB's over the years when they could have drafted them straight up or traded up to get them. Dak, Watson and Carr to name a few and if I'm correct, they could have just straight drafted these three. Then you have the others like Winston, Mariotta and Wentz they weren't smart enough or willing enough to trade up for. The Browns have screwed away several opportunities over the years at the QB game aswell. Bills have also but at least they have a decent young vet in Taylor. The Jets can't get this wrong this year, they just can't. Well then again, we are talking about the Jets so of course they can but hopefully they don't. Always better and easier to build around a franchise QB then not to!!!

What if the Jets start McCown next year?? That is something the Jets would do.

I'm still getting feedback from friends that live close to Jet's land that McCown is being considered as the 2018 starter. Nothing positive, just rumors, from guys who hang in places that some of the team members frequent. That being said it doesn't sound like the idea is too far fetched.

I said something similar in a post a few months ago. I said they know that Petty is really a franchise quarterback, and would take this year and next to build a team around him that will let him shine. The problem is, other than the two safeties, I don't see any other unit being developed, especially the O-line.
Nice plan. (so far) poor execution.

Cowboys are having doubts now as to whether Dak is a FQB. And some said it was obvious that the Jets should have taken him.

Without a FQB it doesn't matter who's around him. There's a reason teams usually collapse once their starting QB goes down for the season...This may be considered the ultimate "team sport" but without the right QB any team is doomed to fail. It really is that important. Can the Jets afford to pass on a QB that goes on to be a difference maker on another team??

They would need to be pretty damn sure of what they have, and right now I don't think they're sure of anything.

Honestly I doubt they think Petty or Hack have the goods to be starters bc you would have seen them perform better during preseason. The jets truly allowed them to take the spot but they failed.

As for McCown as our starter next year --->>> Puke

I think we know Hack is not ready and probably never will be. I think Petty could grow into a decent to good starting QB. Maybe its just hope on my part, but I have seen him develop each year. Not rapidly, but still see growth. He has never been given a chance. I disagree he was given a chance this preseason. Bowles was starting McCown no matter what happened. He was happy Petty got hurt the in the 3rd preseason game so he didn't have to start him.

Come on people, you guys and/or girls are killing me with this crap!!! No disrespect to anyone and I do mean that but what would make you think Petty or Hack has anything positive to offer at this point??? There's an old saying, either you got it or you don't. They both clearly don't have it. If they did, one of them would be playing right now and not McCown. TB gave them every possible opportunity in training camp and pre-season and they did not beat out the old man. Were talking about McCown this year for the starting job they couldn't beat out, McCown!!! Don't get me wrong, McCown has played better then decent this year but there is a reason he is a 7 plus team player and never a franchise guy. Not saying Hack or Petty should be lighting it up and the team should be 7-4 but they should be playing somewhere near what McCown is doing now but they can't even see the field. I think we all need to just let that go. I faught and held onto Sanchez and Geno a lot longer then I needed to but I've learned my lesson from that. Either you have it or you don't and with three years under Petty's belt and two years for Hack, they clearly don't have it. Moving on!!!

The problem is the Jets are one of the worst franchises in history and the Fitz and McCown decisions of the world is one of the main reasons. The Jets have zero hope as far as I'm concerned. They will never be winners. If Petty and Hack don't have it then its either because of Mac or coaching. Until the Jets have something from the top down they will never be winners. They are the New Jersey Browns as far as I'm concerned.

I was willing to ride the McCown wave just like I was with Fitz, but I'm done doing that. When you pick a QB, you play them until they flame out, but letting them sit for 3 years behind terrible career backups is a waste of time for the fans. This organization has sucked the life out of me and the NFL and its players finished it off for me. Only thing that keeps me interested is this forum. Eventually I will just root for them to fail.

Trust me I understand. It’s been about ten years or so now I been so frustrated with this team, I’ve thought on many occasions of just dropping them period. Only problems are I’m not the quitting type of person, I’m too damn loyal to this team and I’ve been rooting for them since 1982, so why the hell stop now??? Plus I always think, it would just be my luck the year I stop rooting for this team will be the year they win a SB!!! So as much as I’m starting to hate the freaking team with a passion, I guess I’ll continue to torture myself and stick with them. Year after year after year, if it ain’t one dumb decision they’re making its another. SMDH!!!

You mean you are someone who likes to inflict pain on one's self....A Jet Fan =).

I dont know....I did take steam out of an Eagle fan at a bar the other night. They started in on the Jets butt fumble and I turned around and started yelling out every debacle with this franchise going back to Heidi. I ended with saying at least the Jets have a SB - how do you like Donovan McNab now!

I must say - my 5 minutes of glory reliving every moment of jet pain and using it as ammunition to take the wind out of a wentz lover in the middle of a bar was liberating and spectacular. If it was easy being a Jet fan, I would probably follow the browns =)

It's very rare a starting QB goes down and the backup comes in and does what Hostetler did and what Keenum is doing this year.... We can give one off expamples for a lot of things but the odds are if a good team loses their starting QB they fall apart and the instances of that happening outnumber your Hostetler reference probably 50-1 or more. NEXT!!!
