John Morton wants Josh McCown back in 2018, but is that best for Jets?

NJ -- The words flew from John Morton's mouth faster than some of his offensive play calls. Thirteen weeks were all he needed to formulate this conclusion.

Did the Jets' first-year offensive coordinator want Josh McCown, his 38-year-old quarterback, back in 2018?

"Sure," Morton said Thursday. "Why wouldn't I? Look at the stats."

Morton's right. McCown's numbers are impressive. But it's not that simple.

McCown, as Morton alluded to, is enjoying a career-year his 15th in the NFL. He's thrown for 2,880 yards (career high) with 18 touchdowns (career high) and just eight interceptions in 12 games. He has a completion percentage of 67.8 (career high), quarterback rating of 96.7, has run for another five scores, and has the not-tanking Jets a surprising 5-7.

And if the Jets knew this Josh McCown would return next year, he'd already have a new deal. Aside from his on-field performance, his leadership and guidance are invaluable to a team comprised of youngsters. Even if the Jets draft a quarterback in April, McCown would be the perfect mentor.

But here's the thing: Father Time eventually catches up to every player. Sometimes without warning.

And quarterbacks aren't an exception.

Brett Favre had a career-year with the Vikings in 2009, only to have his body break down one year later, leading to his retirement. Other guys, like Donovan McNabb, Kurt Warner and Chad Pennington, had similar stories. One year, they're on top of the world. And the next on the bottom.

McCown may be lighting it up now. But at his age (he turns 39 in July) it won't last forever.

The Jets got a first-hand look at such a change not long ago. In 2015, Ryan Fitzpatrick led New York to a 10-6 record, and threw a franchise-record 31 touchdowns. The Jets re-signed him to a one-year, $12 million deal in the offseason ... only to watch his play plummet. Fitzpatrick's currently a backup for the Buccaneers.

While, unlike with Fitzpatrick, the Jets have the cap space (upwards of $108 million) to re-sign McCown without it impacting their other draft plans, is it worth the risk? The same drastic decline could sack him, too. The Jets would then be stuck paying a player who can't, well, play.

While he admitted it's not his call, Morton seems willing to roll the dice.

"He's been consistent. He's perfect for this offense, and we're going to do things that we think he's going to have a lot of success with - just like all of our players.

"That's what you're supposed to do as a coach. You're supposed to put the players in the right position, but I don't see a decline at all. Do you?"

Not yet.

But that doesn't mean one isn't coming.

If we draft a Good QB in the first Rd I would like McCown to come back while working with the young QB. Sure we could be mediocre but we would have finally become a stable team for years to come. That's if our #1 QB does not turn out to be Ryan Leaf or JaMarcus Russell!

If McCown comes back and Bowles is still here, the veteran will start 'because he gives Bowles the best chance to keep his job'. The draft pick will collect splinters and become the next Petty.

The one thing that no one is really talking much about is the influence and impact that John Morton and Jeremy Bates have had on McKown's game. If anything, that has to bode well for hopefully Petty and Hack's development, or a 2018 QB draftee. I've read that Bates is really good, maybe this proof positive.

Recent reports are that the OC wants to bring back McCown for next year, see what I mean. This may have already been discussed on another thread and I missed, so excuse me if I'm late on this but this is exactly what I'm talking about. They are bringing him back next and to start no doubt. If you think otherwise, you got it all wrong. Once again, signs of a cursed franchise that just can't and probably won't ever get it right.

no, during his press conference John Morton was asked if he would want McCown back for another season and he blurted out "sure" at the same time he stated he doesn't control what the team may and will do at this position moving forward...

to make things simple you can forward to the 9:00 mark of this video to hear that question being answered... can go to the 8:13 mark to hear OC Morton praise McCown... I would listen to the whole thing but it is a long presser over ten minutes...

I was just about to post a very similar reply. Morton was asked a question and replied... Sure.
????? laughs all around as he didn't elaborate. Then he said look at the stats. Of course the "fans" who were begging for 0-16 want to jump to Manish like conclusions.
the presser was very telling. Especially when Morton discussed McCown being like a coach at the 8 min mark. I think McCown has actually been more a help to Morton as a first year OC than Morton has been a help to McCown as a 38 year old QB. After hearing Morton say McCown will bring ideas to him about a certain play. I have no doubt that the younger players would not have progressed as much without McCown under center..

so something we can take from that presser is Morton sees potential in our two young QBs from being mentored by McCown... imagine that... but all those reports that keep stating otherwise... at the same time all those reports have sources... thats right sources that they won't name from a regime that got rid of those so called sources...

I don't buy that Petty or Hackenberg are done with potential to start for us... I do buy they will look at all avenues this off season even if that means bringing back McCown at another competitive contract, which could be an incentive based contract... At the end of the day, every head coach wants to win... Regardless if that means riding McCown until he craps out then fine, but last year to this year Petty took a major leap and McCown stated Bates has these guys where if they are needed they will be ready... Hackenberg isn't far off, from what I saw during the off season, I believe he sews up a few small details in footwork and pre-recognition skills... With his big arm, having footwork improved will improve his accuracy... Here is one gaff, his running mate at Penn State WR Allen Robinson is a free agent, that would be a huge off season signing and to bring them together, maybe just maybe -- could you imagine the downfield threats...

With McCown have to believe he is pouring his knowledge and experience into both of our youngins, because that is who he is a veteran that wants to better everyone even a QB that could take his job one day as Morton said...

Thanks and appreciate you sending or posting this. I haven’t listened to it and don’t think I will, as I’m no where near as invested in the team this year but I get your point. Hopefully that was more of a tongue-in-cheek type of statement then actually facts. Whether he comes back or not, hopefully they draft a QB in whatever round and he becomes our game one starter and franchise QB. Hell, he can be an rookie free agent signing, just get one dammit!!!

Jets keep an older veteran journeyman and limit their prospects for developing a young franchise QB = Same Ol' Jets

Jets let a QB who put up stats like McCown walk for nothing, without a proven upgrade at QB = Same Ol' Jets

I'm just constructing the narrative so the team can be bashed no matter which way it goes here. You're welcome.

If Petty or Hack had developed to outplay McCown, they would be playing. This notion that the Jets are sitting on two surefire young franchise QBs because Bowles would rather play McCown is ridiculous. He is playing who he, the coaches, and the FO believe is the best QB on the roster. If Josh McCown is such a bum, then I would think a young upstart would be able to beat him out for the spot.

I think the misconception here is both Petty and Hackenberg showed promise but are new to this type of offense whereas McCown is more familiar and has connections to QB Coach Bates to be able to command this offense... Doesn't matter if either were ready, TB wants to make sure he has a sure fire competent signal caller that they don't have to dumb down the offense for them to learn by playing... As it stands after this season is their make or break year to take the job, well at least for Petty as he will be entering his contract year next season, for Hackenberg the ideal would be for him to take the job next season but he is under contract for two more years which gives the team wiggle room to groom him...

At the same time having a well rounded veteran QB like McCown allows the rest of the team to continue to develop their potentials rather struggle with a young inexperienced QB... Moving forward these two will be in the mix and if we draft someone he too will be in the mix because now the players surrounding that QB in question they will be able to carry him while he learns on the fly in game experience...

People will always debate whether a QB should crawl before he learns to walk, like in the case of Mark Sanchez we threw him in there expecting him to run, before crawling or even walking and how did that turn out? We finally have a regime that is trying to develop its youth rather then stunt their growth by asking to do what they are not ready for...

I emailed Manish and told him the voices in his head are not sources. He never responded...
I agree, I don't think the FO or coaches have given up on Petty or Hack and they could very well be in the future plans. Of course that won't play well with the Suck for Sam crew.
Robinson , Anderson and Enunwa would be scary....
I know there are those who will bitch that McCown is Fitz , but I don't think they could be further apart. Fitz cried to the media that he should be the starter when he was benched. Everyone complaining conveniently forgot Bowles in fact benched Fitz for Geno, then Petty. Both were injured so Fitz was back. McCown has always been one to help mentor his replacement when not starting. That was one of the main reasons he was the JAG chosen.

don't forget about Kearse he ain't going anywhere under contract for 2 more seasons after this one... would be not opposed if they brought back Kerley for another year, but yeah the main thing is patience which this fan base has none... TB and this coaching staff this year have done a wonder to this point and will continue to develop this team to it's fullest potential with free agents and more draft selections each and every year moving forward...

True. Remember how patient the Pats were with Garoppolo, the Pack with Rodgers. We will know a lot about how the organization feels about Petty and/or Hack based on this offseason. A big splash in the draft or in bringing in a veteran would signal full distrust in one of them.
