What would it cost Jets to move up for top pick in NFL Draft?

NJ -- Hindsight is 20/20. Nearly eight months after Mike Maccagnan purged the Jets' roster of its aging, but well-known veterans, everything is crystal-clear.

He made the right call.

While the Jets are far from a Super Bowl contender, they're clearly headed in the right direction. Wideout Robby Anderson looks like a budding star. Linebackers Darron Lee and Jordan Jenkins have made noticeable strides. Tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins is a difference-maker, defensive end Leonard Williams a stud, and safeties Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye future Pro Bowlers.

There's just one thing the Jets don't have: A franchise quarterback.

Will they get one in April?

As of today, the Jets hold the 10th pick in the 2018 draft. If they want one of the top quarterbacks, they'll likely have to move up. The Browns (No. 1) and Giants (No. 2) aren't likely to trade their picks. But the 49ers (No. 3) could.

NFL general managers regularly refer to a pick chart when determining the fairness of draft trades. The charts assign a point value to each pick, with higher picks being worth more points.

If Team X wants Team Y's pick, they'll combine a grouping of their own picks to reach a point value that gets close to the value of the desired pick. Each team's chart varies slightly, which is why charts are exchanged when negotiating a trade.

Below is an example of one team's trade chart from ProFootballTalk:

Here's a look at the NFL Draft's trade chart, as compiled by ProFootballTalk.Connor Hughes | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

Using the above chart as an example: The No. 3 pick holds a point value of 2,200. The Jets' No. 10 pick has a value of 1,300. So the Jets would need to make up the difference.

Without taking into consideration compensatory draft picks, the rest of the Jets' picks hold the following values
  • 2nd Round: 480
  • 2nd Round (Seahawks): 350
  • 3rd Round: 220
  • 4th Round: 82
  • 5th Round (Cowboys): 34.5
  • 6th Round: 23.4
  • 7th Round: 10.6
If the Jets combined their first-round pick (1,300), one of their second-round picks (480), and a fourth-round pick (82), they'd get to 1,862 points. That's still a 338-point difference. The Jets would have to include a future draft pick to close the gap -- potentially a second- or third rounder.

Teams will use the same chart to determine the value of future picks. They'll estimate where said team will be selecting, then go from there. Example: A future Patriots' first-round pick is valued differently than that of the Browns.

Here's what a fair trade could look like for the Jets to move from the No. 10 pick in the draft, to No. 3:

49ERS GET: Jets 2018 1st-round pick (10th overall), 2nd-round pick (42nd), 4th round-pick (106th) | 2019 2nd-round pick [estimated between No. 15 and 20]
JETS GET: 49ers' 2017 1st-round pick (3rd)

Here where things get tricky, though: The Jets may not be the only team competing for that draft pick.

Wilkerson gets testy

The Broncos (4th overall), Cardinals (11th overall), Chargers (14th overall), Bills (17th overall) and Jaguars (25th overall) could all be in the market for a quarterback. They too could want to move up. The Jets may offer a fair trade ... but it won't matter if another team offers more.

Teams, occasionally, will bid against each other, and have to give up more for the pick than it's worth. The Jets may have to overpay if they want to ensure they get their guy.

And it's gotten to the point where they may have to.

The Jets need a franchise quarterback. No matter the cost.

I don't think its going to come down to the # of points offered. I believe it will be the best package overall. That includes our 1st, 2nd maybe both 2nds and our 1st next year if not more, It depends which QB's they are enamored with. Right now I have heard the Giants and maybe the Browns are in love with Rosen.

Was watching a draft show this am on ESPN with Kiper. Both said that Rosen was the most NFL ready and has a all of the skill necessary to be a franchise QB, BUT both and particularly McShay said that he has a polarizing personality that may not play in NFL lockerrooms, and that football may not be that important to him. Sounds a little like Jay Cutler to me.

this article was Connor Hughes, as I don't believe the Jets will need to move up to get one of the top guys because this draft is deep with potential...
  • Sam Darnold is likely to return to school
  • Josh Rosen seems like he is poised to return with Chip Kelly now the new HC
  • Josh Allen will declare and will be the top QB taken -- pick 2-6
  • Lamar Jackson will declare, will be tested as a WR but in the end some team aka the Browns will draft him as a QB -- pick 7-10
  • Mason Rudolph another QB prospect getting little love at this point but could be taken in top 15 -- pick 11-15
  • Baker Mayfield looks like he is the reward winner for this year and will be drafted by pick 32-36 (could elevate into 1st round with great combine)
  • Luke Falk another good not great option should be selected around pick(s) 39-44
  • Ryan Finley another second round talent probably selected around pick 51-56
  • Nick Fitzgerald sleeper prospect not getting much attention but in the right system could flourish pick 64-69
  • Clayton Thorsen getting no love from the media like Fitzgerald but could be a solid third round selection pick 72-78
That is 8 of 10 prospects that are more than likely locks to enter the draft this year

Chip Kelly had great success as a college coach, but was a bust in the NFL, in my opinion. Why would Rosen, who is quite likely to be the first pick, want to spend a year in Kelly's somewhat exotic system and then have to learn a very different system in his rookie year?

Chip Kelly had great success as a college coach, but was a bust in the NFL, in my opinion. Why would Rosen, who is quite likely to be the first pick, want to spend a year in Kelly's somewhat exotic system and then have to learn a very different system in his rookie year?

Kelly’s track record with Oregon’s quarterbacks is sensational. Kelly became the Ducks’ offensive coordinator in 2007, where he turned Dennis Dixon into a star. Dixon was always just an okay college quarterback. That was until Chip Kelly was hired and Dixon was named PAC-12 Offensive Player of the Year and prior to injury lead Oregon to be the number two ranked school in the nation.

Then there is the most obvious quarterback success for Kelly — Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota. Mariota became the first freshman to start for the Oregon Ducks in 22 years when he received the starting nod 2012. After two successful years, Mariota decided to bypass the NFL Draft and return for his junior year. Mariota won the Heisman that year.

That is exactly what the UCLA Football Bruins want in Rosen. Rosen, who is undeniably talented, could become a perennial Heisman candidate under the right coaching system. Rosen still is a strong candidate for the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, but an injury that sidelined him in the second half against Cal could send question marks.

Realistically, this was UCLA protecting the future NFL star. This may be signalling the end of Rosen in Westwood. Hiring Chip Kelly is the last plea to counter Rosen’s desires to play in the NFL.

If anything, there is unfinished business for Rosen at UCLA. Rosen has missed several games the last two seasons because of injury. Plus, Rosen has never won a Bowl Game and holds a losing record as the quarterback at UCLA.

You're making my case. Rosen has *already* had several injuries. He should risk a more serious injury to play for a losing team and a coach who has achieved great success with the 2 QBs you mentioned above *in college,* but no success in the NFL? Show me the list of classic pocket passers with whom Kelly had success in either college, or most importantly in the NFL. I know what Kelly did in Oregon, but that's irrelevant with regard to Rosen .Kelly was a failure in the NFL, plain and simple.

plain n simple, whether he will or won't declare is irrelevant and waste of my time... what he said and what Kelly said puts doubt that he will declare no matter what you have to say about it...

I don't know that a top QB draft prospect is likely to happen this draft and Unless the FO decides to part ways with Petty or Hack , a second level prospect isn't likely either.
I honestly think the Browns take a QB with the first pick. Haslam has made it clear that QB is the #1 priority and being the Browns, that QB could very well be Lamar Jackson . That's who Hue Jackson covets so unless the Browns sign Cousins in Free Agency that's one QB gone. The Giants will most likely take Rosen (if he decides to declare). Darnold , if he doesn't go back for another year will drop . He's a project at this point. His footwork is a mess, his throwing motion is terrible, he is strictly a one read QB. If his first look Reciever is covered, he runs from the pocket. Never goes through progressions. That will not cut it in the NFL. He would be a good pick for a team like the Chargers or Saints. Someone with a FQB who can let him sit for at least a year if not 2. I don't see another prospect worth trading the farm for. Better to have the pices in place for a QB we draft in 19 or maybe for Petty or Hack. Fans are still complaining about taking a project QB(Hack) in round 2 yet those are the same fans demanding to trade up for a project in round 1.
The opinions on this draft class will change after the season. Film will be studied , there will be the senior bowl and combine. Injuries, arrests and the rankings will look much different. As of now the QBs are not what was advertised. Sure one or 2 will surprise next year and with 20/20 hindsight we can complain about passing on them. He'll most were against Watson last year .

I have said it before, this is the first year of a rebuild. It's going to take time.
I know the feelings of many, " the rebuild Should have happened 3 years ago " , it didn't.

"This team has tried to rebuild so many times " it hasn't ,and those who want to go crazy in Free agency and trade up to win in 18 are looking for the same band aid that others are confusing with a rebuild.

I know after nearly 50 years it's hard to have patience , but things appear to be heading in the right direction. The roster is getting younger , I'd developing. Even players like Lee have made strides.
If your honest , you will see the rookies who stepped in and had success went to teams that we're already built.
Wentz , Goff would not have this team in the playoffs. Dak , Carr are struggling with much better rosters. If Mac drafted Watson , half the fan base would be calling for Mac to be fired, labeling Watson a bust due to his Injury.
The NFL is in a transition stage. The Elites are rapidly ageing out and it's time for a changing of the guard.
I know it's hard to have faith but things appear to be heading in the right direction for this franchise. Let's hope it continues.

If what you quoted (maybe) is correct. Wait till next year to draft a QB. One 1st Rd pick and two 2nd Rd picks, lets build our OL! One or two Bookend tackles, Guard or a Center! We will be getting younger and stronger. We have lots of needs so lets draft for the Offense side of the ball!

"there just one thing the jets dont have...franchise QB"

err no. We need so many things desperately......but now that we have a full season of video of Petty and Hack in the NFL, we can assess their potential

err no.....
