BR -- Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson will likely be cut by the New York Jets following the conclusion of the 2017 season.

Citing sources, the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta reported Wednesday, "[T]here is exactly a zero percent chance that he will be on the Jets next year under the current terms of his contract."

Another source simply told Mehta: "He's gone."

The looming divorce has reportedly been fueled by Wilkerson's conduct off the field as well as his underwhelming performance on it.

"Some people are ticked off at Wilkerson’s repeated violation of team rules," Mehta wrote. "Others have grown tired of Wilkerson’s disappearing act on gamedays, while picking up a Pro Bowl paycheck."

Through 12 games, Wilkerson—who signed a five-year, $86 million deal that includes $53.5 million guaranteed prior to the 2016 season—has mustered 2.5 sacks and 40 total tackles.

News of the Jets' displeasure with Wilkerson comes three days after head coach Todd Bowles benched the Pro Bowler for the first quarter of Sunday's 38-31 win over the Kansas City Chiefs for being late to a team meeting, according to NJ.com's Connor Hughes.

Hughes added Wilkerson "has regularly shown up late to team's morning meetings this season."

If the Jets want to rid themselves of that headache, they will have an opportunity to do so.

According to Spotrac, the Jets can ensure Wilkerson's 2018 salary is never fully guaranteed if they cut him before the third day of the new league year. If they take that step, they'll be forced to eat $9 million in dead cap but will save $11 million in the process.

Should the Jets wait beyond that date and guarantee Wilkerson's $16.7 million salary, they would save $17 million in 2018 and be forced to eat $3 million of dead cap in 2018 and another $6 million in 2019.

If they cut him before March, he'll run up to New England and sign with the Pats. I'm for cutting him.

Anyone else, beside me, not even notice Wilkerson wasn't playing the 1st quarter last week?
I think he had as many tackles as Darren Lee last week.
He showed up big a few games this year but for what the Jets are paying him he needs to show up big every week.

He was suspended for the first quarter . He finished with 3 solo tackles and .5 sack.
?????Lee was suspended for the game and didn't play.
Mo only showed up when Bowles publicly talked about benching him. He has since gone back into disappearing mode.

It was tough to notice Mo with our safeties getting smoked.

That was the point with Lee.

And will miss the next game completely as a result. Time to send him packing before he contaminates the locker room and save some money while we are at it.

You know I thought he should have been sent packing last year. This goes back to the Rex era.
He should be benched for the remainder of the year and cut after the playoffs. No reason to give him the opportunity to sign with a contender for the remainder of the year and no reason to chance injury that would guarantee his salary next year....

Yup, Just like the Buccaneers did to Keyshawn Johnson. Send Mo home for the remainder of the year for conduct detrimental to the team.
Is the contract designed in a way where when the Jets let him go and and he signs with another team, would the Jets be eligible for a compensatory pick?

No. Compensatory picks are only for free agents.

This is part of the problem of building a super-duper defense while ignoring offense. Defense runs on emotion and if effort is futile because you have no offense and are never going to the playoffs, players become demotivated. We should at least trade him to somebody outside our Division, or a remotivated Wilk will be running amok in our backfield twice a year while the media run the 'revenge game' narrative. Wouldn't it be ironic if we draft this wonderful FQB and his career is ended by our former #1 draft pick? A little too ironic....

First, good for Bowles for taking any more of Mo's BS. He deserves to sit at home the rest of the year. No need to even have him in the lockerroom. I agree that they should wait until the offseason to cut him - it sounds like he wants to get cut so he can sign on with another team this year. The Jets should make him sit it out.

Second point - this goes to my opinion about character being so critical when drafting players. I liked Harrison a lot. I know they lost out to the Giants in a competitve bidding war, but he was a high character guy by all accounts. The Jets need to build a roster with guys like that. It looks like they have. They need to keep that going. Because character in my opinion is what makes good teams great teams. So when the Jets are looking to draft this year, and they are looking at QBs - some of them should immediately be off their Board. If they can't lead men, if they're not great leaders on and off the field, then they shoudn't be in the conversation to be the face of the franchise. This should apply at every position, but especially at QB. So what does that mean, well players with potential character questions such as Rosen and Mayfield will need to be heavily scrutinized. My early opinion is that Mayfield should be off their draft Board entirely. People with character don't get arrested, and don't grab their crotch on national TV or accost the fans of the opposing team. Rosen, his is more of personality question - is he apathetic to football, despite his physical talent. If he is, then he's not meant to be the leader of a pro football team. He can go into investment banking or something and do fine. If he does care, and there's a misconception about him, and he's there when the Jets pick, great.

My point is - draft character guys, we don't need any more Wilkerson situations.

Right, he'll end up as a cheetah with the motivation of all the rings he wants and we will regret it ... And he'll play there for cheap and never be late again
