ESPN -- Is Josh McCown planning to retire after the season?

The 38-year-old quarterback, sidelined for the final three games with a fractured left hand, made a cryptic remark about his future to teammate Matt Forte after the New York Jets’ loss in Denver.

Forte shared the moment on Tuesday during an appearance on the NFL Network's "Good Morning Football."

"In the locker room, I had talked to Josh when I first came in the locker room," Forte said. "I was like, 'How bad is it?' and he told me obviously his hand was broken.

"He didn't even know that when he threw the ball, he threw it to me and I caught it. He told me like, 'That might be my last pass.' I was like, 'Of the season or ...?' Because you never know. I mean, this is Josh's 15th year in the league."

Forte didn't provide McCown's response to the question, if there was a response, but McCown likely was referring to his career, not just the season. His age, coupled with his looming free-agent status, creates an uncertain future. Publicly, he hasn't declared his intentions.

If that was his last pass, it'll go down as a 14-yard completion to Forte -- the Jets' longest play of the day, as it turned out.

In the same interview, Forte praised McCown for his positive impact on the locker room.

"He's been the main factor in changing the culture in the Jets' organization, especially in the locker room," he said.

Forte and McCown are close because they were teammates with the Chicago Bears from 2011 to 2013. Asked if he'd like to see McCown back in 2018, Forte said, "I would, I would love to see that. Josh is an amazing player, an even better father, husband, brother and teammate. He's one of my all-time favorite guys."

So the Jets played a 38 year old reject, 7 plus team career back up QB for the entire season pretty much only to win 5 games during a rebuilding/reloading season and he’s retiring next year? Wow, real freaking smart Jets organization. What a bunch of class A brain surgeons you are. Only the Jets, true Morons!!!

I can only hope he does retire so we can move on to the next 38 year old 5 plus team career back up who will taking reps away from a young QB that you could be evaluating to see if he’s our guy. Let’s see who’s out there this time, Osweiler or maybe bring Kellen Clemens back? How about this, they bring back Neil Odonell or a injury plagued RGIII???

I bet Vinny is still in close to game shape. I'd give him a call before any of those other guys.

But seriously, if they are going to bring in some reject, then I hope McCown stas instead. He is a good guy, and a good leader. 2 things this team needs

Lets hope it was the last pass for the Jets.

I disagree. He played his ass off for us and earned the opportunity to EARN a roster spot next season. His numbers were way better than anyone could have expected. Especially given how little he played during the preseason. My expectation is Mac drafts a QB. That QB will be fighting it out with McCown for the opportunity to start.

if Toilet is still here there won't be a 'fight'. The veteran gives him the best chance to keep his job. Has anyone pointed out to him that Petty is a veteran (and for that matter Hackensack)?

This is true, but it was also true with Fitz. Can McCown play just as well next season or do you see another repeat of Fitz? Personally, from what I've seen and heard, I really like this guy but given his age and the fact that he is a Jet, it's likely to be another repeat of Fitz. That said, if he doesn't hold out for crazy money, I would bring him back with an offensive line. Yes an offensive line. We should get one of those first. At worst he would be a good role model and teacher for whoever we draft...and that is very important

I'm not willing to just assume that he will turn into a bust next season just because Fitz did. One has nothing to do with the other and as you pointed out guys he was great for team morale, he did play well and got great effort from his teammates. If he doesn't retire and can be resigned for a reasonable price I would be glad to see him back. I am convinced that the chances of Petty or Hack being anywhere near as good are slim to none because there is absolutely no indication from the staff that they are. I think we need to resign McCown if possible, draft the best QB available when we are up to bat and replace both Petty and Hack with a free agency guy and devote the rest of our picks to shoring up the "O" line, defensive back field, and other spots of obvious need.
