McCown has a new job: player-coach

Josh McCown could be getting an early start on his next career.

The former New York Jets starting quarterback, sidelined for the remainder of the season with a fractured left hand, will travel with the team this weekend to New Orleans. On Sunday, he'll have a role.

"He'll be a player-coach on the sideline," Jets coach Todd Bowles said Thursday.

McCown, 38, who will be a free agent, has said he'd like to get into coaching when his playing days are over. He hasn't said when that will be, but he seems like a natural coach. Even though he's injured, he continues to attend meetings and practice, wearing a bulky cast on his surgically repaired hand.

In Thursday's practice, McCown hung out with the quarterbacks during the walk-through period, offering advice and encouragement in between throws. He was quick to respond with a high-five if one of the quarterbacks made a particularly good throw.

"He's helping them, giving them pointers here and there on what they should look at and what they shouldn't look at," Bowles said. "If he can help, he'll help."

Some coaches don't let injured players travel on the road, but Bowles evidently believes McCown's presence will help the two young quarterbacks, starter Bryce Petty and backup Christian Hackenberg. Bowles said McCown has a future in the business.

"If that's what he wants to do, I can see him being an excellent coach when he's done playing," Bowles said.

Bowles said he's not sure if McCown will serve as a "player-coach" in the final two games.

He's a smart player respected by the players and it can't hurt having him on the sideline.

thinking they need a translator to explain things to Petty from O.C. and Q.B. coaches... :global (31):

as of right now, becoming a journeyman would be a positive accomplishment for petty

I really feel bad that his season ended this way, but his new role almost seems like a good thing that he might some day look back in favor? If he wants to be a coach, what better way than right now? What if by some strange miracle Mac comes through and the Jets get themselves the real deal QB? The guy that eventually becomes a legit winner and McCown is on this team and taught him a lot of what he becomes? Something like that could parlay itself into a truly a great coaching career.......

True. Right now I don't see anything better than a prospect gone sour? His stock has plummeted. However, if he can make a good showing in these 3 games maybe he could cement himself as the Jets back up or 3rd string QB for the future.....

As far as I can see so far that would be a step up for him. Next 3 games are probably his make or break games.

I agree he is going to have to show something. It's not going to be easy for him , he didn't get a single snap with the first team all year so building chemistry and getting timing down will take a couple of games. Time he really doesn't have. By all accounts he out played Hack in camp but Hack was pushed ahead in preseason. Petty really has not gotten a chance here and would probably benefit from a change of scenery.

all Petty needs to accomplish is command the huddle, work half the field and don't cause turnovers... he does these three, hopefully between the receivers and running backs should be to help move the chains and get us into scoring opportunities... only way he will grow is if he can successfully continue to grow steadily not try to be the hero on each snap...

Exactly. He needs to manage the game and offense well and protect the ball. Those will be his two most important challenges.

Lets just hope Petty doesn't end up being a journeyman.

Journeyman looks like that’s the best he be and a true accomplishment for him. Sad too, you would think he has all the attributes to get it done but he just doesn’t. Another one bites the bust in the Jets gambit of quarterback draft pick blunders. Hack falls into the category as well. Maybe they’ll get it right this year.

Please retire McCown so the Jets will be forced to draft a QB and hopefully the right one this time!!! Hopefully they won’t pull another Hoyer type of vet pickup to help us go nowhere but set the franchise back a few more years again.
