Two weeks ago Aaron Rodgers returned to lead the Green Bay Packers against Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers. Rodgers’ return signaled a final shot for Green Bay to make a playoff push, but after a loss, the team decided to place its star quarterback on the injured reserve list.

According to Adam Schefter, the move made many teams around the league unhappy.

Schefter explains why here:
NFL rules stipulate that a player needs to have suffered a new injury that would sideline him at least six weeks to be placed on injured reserve. If that is not the case, the team is obligated to release the player once he is healthy.
Unless Rodgers suffered a new injury in the game against Carolina, the Packers, by rule, should have to release him.

Will that happen? No, which is why teams are upset. They want to know why Green Bay was granted immunity from the rule in this case.

Interesting story. Could the league enforce the rule, or will there be any punishment? Lost draft picks?

It was also pointed out that IF the NFL enforces the rule and Rogers is released the Browns would be first in line to claim him off waivers. Can't wait to see how this plays out. Can you ??

I'm expecting a large fine and lost draft pick.
I can't imagine the league will enforce it.
If the Browns claimed him he'd likely retire of maybe force a trade back to Green Bay.

I think you are correct. I am pretty certain that he would not play.

I really can't see the league enforcing the rules here. Rodgers is too liked and respected around the league. The Packers will likely say it's a new injury and the league will sweep it under the table.

I hope it does work out like that because it just wouldn't be the same.
