The New York Jets have extended the contracts of general manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles.

“We are very happy to have extended both Mike and Todd. During their time here, they have worked together to help the organization build a foundation on which to grow,” Jets CEO Christopher Johnson said. “They are identifying, developing, and getting productivity out of our players. I believe we are headed in the right direction. This provides us continuity and stability as we continue to move this team towards sustained success. We still have a lot of work to do and I am excited to work closely with both of them as we move forward.”

Maccagnan, hired to his position on Jan. 13, 2015, is focused on building the team’s foundation through the draft. Named the 16[SUP]th[/SUP] full-time head coach in franchise history on Jan. 14, 2015, Bowles instilled a culture change in 2017 and players continually praised the improved chemistry in the locker room. Working together, the Jets’ football leaders have drafted and developed key players including Leonard Williams, Darron Lee, Jamal Adams, Marcus Maye and Robby Anderson. The roster was also bolstered with trades for Demario Davis and Jermaine Kearse in the offseason as they both became key contributors for the defense and offense respectively.

The Jets will conclude their 2017 regular season against the Patriots at Gillette Stadium on New Year’s Eve. The Green & White head into the offseason with financial flexibility and three picks in the first two rounds of the 2018 NFL Draft.

I for one, think that this was the right thing to do. I think both guys were stuck with the competitive rebuild POS that Woody wanted. Go ahead and pile on.

Agreed. No successful franchise is a revolving door.

There has been improvement. The roster is a lot younger, the team has been much more competitive, and while things are far from perfect, it is also way too early to pull the plug on this foundational build. Too often, the impatience of Jets fans and the media has forced the team to think short-term, spending on free agents just to compete for a wild card. This is a much better approach for long-term, sustained success, even if it means putting up with a New York and national media mocking them and fans wanting to fire everyone.

Wow, don’t know what to say here. Just doesn’t seem to be the right move. Hopefully it works out soon enough. I have absolutely no faith in this organization and any decisions they make. Hence the draft and this QB thing. Guess we’ll see!

I absolutely think was the right move. I always thought to be fair, when the decision was made to completely overhaul the roster, that Bowles and Mac deserved two years to start to see their plans take shape. This was year 1, and this team exceed everyone's expectations. Continuity is key to success in the NFL and to Sack's point, essential for sustained success. Having a revolving door of GMs and HCs and then coordinators does nothing but create havoc and dysfunction. It also makes it nearly impossible for players to develop if they are learning a new system every two years, especially on offense.

This is not a winning team yet - but this is a good, competitive football team. They need pieces, but the foundation is definitely there. I like what Mac has done in the draft, and I think Bowles and his coaching staff did a really great job of developing talent, particularly on defense, but you can see it on the offensive side as well. There's a good core group of young, talented players here now.
Adams, Maye, Leonard Williams, Jenkins, Darron Lee, Robby Anderson. And some of the FAs are still young - Davis, Kearse, Sefarian Jenkins, Claiborne all are all still young and in the prime of their careers.

Last point - kudos to Christopher Johnson. He's different than Woody and I think he has built the culture that he wants. I liked him immediately, and his actions with the team have been very impressive. Dare I say he brings a personality to this organization, and he appears to have a winner's mentality. I think he knows how he wants to build a winner, not just that he needs to build a winner, and there is a big difference.

I have to agree. It was the right move.
this is year 1 of a true rebuild. Something this franchise has desperately needed.
The extensions will remove the temptation to go all in during free agency to try win now to save jobs vs building the team for a sustainable future. Stability is needed both for the continued development and to make the franchise more attractive to potential future hires
Now let's hope Mac can draft well this year, add some quality, younger free agents and keep some of our own FAs in the building.

Mikey Mack Im ok with. Bowles who has lost the team & had players quit on him the last 3 seasons, Im not happy Jets signed him. I didnt care about the record deciding on Bowles, but Players quitting,in games & on national TV with Chucky replaying Players half pathetic effort was embarrassing. If Players dont play hard for Coach you cant keep him! Giants figured that out this year & Im worried that Jets will have that kind of Giants quitting season again.

wow didn't realize you are on the inside and can definitively state that Bowles lost the team even though those same players you are talking about have admittedly stated that fans like yourself don't know what is going on behind the scenes in the locker room on the practice field but keep assuming... I am also assuming you haven't been watching the games this year as this team in all three phases have been busting their humps from start to finish... sorry gas., but you are totally wrong, what happened last year was a mutiny from a group of aged veterans that took the wrong path in backing up a guy who only cared about getting paid rather than getting back to work, his production showed on the field...

this team is bought in, a youth development that took shape and proved the media whom are so called experts that our team would not win one game, in fact we were down to the wire in almost every game this season because these players that have quit on this coach never gave up...

for those here who are fans of continuity in the NFL, today must be jet fan nirvana!! but in an intellectually honest moment, ask yourselves this..

what's the good of continuity with a HC who still gets consistently out coached head to head going into week 17 of year three??

what's the good of continuity with a GM who will be going into year four with perhaps the shakiest QB situation in the league under his watch?? the same GM is also going into year four looking to draft his first legit OLmen, CB, WR, RB & edge rusher..

oh, BTW continuity guys.. maccagnan might have been forced fed bowles in '15 but today they are officially attached at the hip as far as their jet careers are concerned.. so much for continuity when both are canned before their 2 year extensions end.. :(

Would firing them have been the right decision? Or is it a blanket statement that any move they made would be wrong, regardless of what they did?

So if we don't win next year
which seems to be "OK" with ownership and a lot of fans because of the "rebuild process " and dosent go by wins and losses
do we stay the course ?? Because you need continuity
better see a big improvement and start to contend for playoffs next year or this garbage will go on forever

I guess the players hate it. But what do they know? It's really what the fans think that matters.

Depends on the situation. If the team is developing a young QB and shows progress, the way the team showed progress with young players at several other positions, I'm fine with it.

If for some reason they go on a huge spending spree, deviating from their true slow build plan, and sign Cousins and spend like drunken sailors on free agents, then no, it comes down to wins and losses.

For me, I'd rather the team took the first path, as I'd rather not mortgage true sustained success for a couple years of having a shot at 9 or 10 wins, all to appease the fan base.

link?? by your observation, who in this fan base is clamoring for shooting for another short term window of 9-10 wins??

ironically, i can't think of one poster here who was more impressed with the jets '15 spending spree, 10 win non playoff season then you were/still are..
