isn't that mccown in your avatar??

haven't you often posted how well you believed mccown played this season??

It's Namath and all of our QBs. I was hoping some of Broadway Joe would rub off on them! McCown did play well, but we have to move on from "stopgap" QBs.

To all of the naysayers out there - who exactly is it that you want to replace Bowles? Give me a name. Who is going to come in and immediately transform this entire team into an immediate Super Bowl contender? And what's your rationale for taking a young team and then turning over the entire coaching staff, changing systems, philosophies, policies, and relationships? Do you recognize that this kind of turnover will set a very young team back another two years?

Think about your own jobs - when did you actually start to get it? It takes two years to become even proficient in most professions, and 5 years before you are seasoned enough to really know your job well. Football is no different. Continuity, consistency, and buy-in are very important to the success of any team. With Bowles and Mac, that is what you have. They haven't been perfect, but you are seeing progress, good progress. Sometimes the smart move is to stay the course. I have confidence that over time, those of us that are onboard with this decision will be proven right, and that this was a smart move by Christopher Johnson.

This is one of the best posts ever on here.A++++ Also what G said who here is in the locker room of the Jets. Also it is funny that many of the Cardinal fans want TB if we had dropped him....As far as another coach I keep calling Lombardi & Weeb but get no answer.

I said a few years ago that TB could become a great coach I still stand by that.....He could flop but so could anyone. I also said I question big mac but I have liked some of what I see but I need to see more....... So bottom line Johnson did he right thing in my book. If we had dropped him I would want TB back on the Cards now I hope BA will not retire.

never understood this line of questioning.. what, if a fan can't rattle off a laundry list of names, then a HC should not be replaced based off that??

It's a completely valid line of questioning. If you are going to fire the head coach, it's because you want an upgrade there. So, who is your upgrade?

I'm willing to see what Bowles can do when given a real answer at QB. Look no further than the 49ers. Kyle Shanahan didn't suddenly get smarter when Garoppolo became his starting QB.

This^^^^^^

McCown had a surprisingly good season and has had a few good seasons in the past. But ranked at 16...middle of the pack usually is not going to get anyone to the SB. So true, the right QB can make any coach look so much better.

I believe if Rex had ever found a good QB he might still be coaching now...

I'll second Butterscotch 's endorsement of this post. It does take many years to really be good at your job. I was for keeping Rex around longer for this reason , but that's another story.

I Have wanted A total dismantling of this team for years and understand that this process will take a Long Time And Be Very Ugly. Cant Say Im Sure If Either Of These Guys Is The Man For The Job But I Do Feel It Takes More Time To Tell.

Now Is A Good Time To Rebuild Anyone As The Cheatahs Will Be Winning All The Superbowls For The Forseeable Future. Why Be Good Now When All We Can Be Is Send Best In Our Division. Maybe We Can Time This Build So That We Can Be Good After Belichick Gets Bored And Leaves .

We Might Stink But How Fun Would It Be To Be the Steelers and know that if belichick never existed????? that you would have a handful of Superbowl rings

I'm fine with complaining because we as Jet fans have earned the right to complain, that's for darn sure, but we can give the rebuild a chance and complain at the same time.

But what do I know anyway? I can't even figure out what causes my tablet to capitalize every word for long periods of time

but let's keep him anyway for consistency sake , Hold on to those timeouts Todd and don't change a thing at the half ,luv you

Names ??? Take your pick and that's not even scratching the surface

Come on guys you make it sound like Bowles is the be all end all to develope a young team....Why??? Evidence????

... just for the sake of clarity.. in your mind, an NFL HC should not be fired unless some guy/guys on fan forum can name who's an upgrade?? OK.....

You fire someone for lack of performance in any field in the workforce. You then go find his replacement .
You fire someone just for the upgrade ? Wow , a lot of people are in trouble
Sorry I'm lettin you go because I found someone better than you

Another 5-11 season and they both will be fired. The Jets won't be much better than that next year.

if maccagnan is left to his own devices, he will spend every available nickel in FA not to go 5-11 in '18..

look for '15 & '16 all over again..

It's about upgrading the entire coaching staff - and if you can't do that, why would you disrupt the entire organization? The foundational point here is that many of us believe that Bowles and his staff did a very solid job this year and he deserves an opportunity to continue what he started as this team rebuilds. I believe that the changes Bowles made to the coaching staff in the offseason paid immediate dividends on and off the field as well. They haven't been perfect, but they certainly earned the chance to continue in my opinion. But most importantly, Bowles has the support of the players, the GM and the owner. It takes all of those parts of the organization working together in unison for a franchise to be successful. Why turn that upside down? Because you wanted this team to win 7 games instead of 5 when they were projected to win 1 or 2? I don't understand the logic.

As far as the names mentioned - Harbaugh is going to be extremely hard to pull away from Michigan. Gruden has not expressed any interest in coming back to coaching. If you could get one of them, you would have to consider it. But again, you have to weigh that against what it would do to a young, developing team that is all in with this coaching staff. Why pull the plug on that? In any case, I don't see either of them coming to the Jets. I'm sure those inquiries were made some time ago. And my belief is that neither expressed any interest.

The rest of the names you mentioned are all coordinators - several of them would never come here because they are Patriots or ex-Patriots, and the rest are first time head coaches, which is not an upgrade. I believe Shurmur was a HC for a short but unsuccessful stint, so I'm unsure why he would make your list Bigmoe.

Last point - firing someone for non-performance to replace that person with someone that can "perform" is by definition an upgrade. The question is whether the organization can receive better performance by making a personnel change. That is true in every profession, and for every job. Than you have to balance the risks associated with making a change vs. staying the course. Here, the decision was to stay the course. I believe it was the right one.

I do ;like Mac and I am happy with his extension but I have always felt Bowles is Rex light without the big mouth. With the hopes of bringing in a franchise QB I wanted a head coach from the offensive side finally for this up coming season.

you expressed in great detail why you believe bowles earned his extension.. in far less detail, you've mentioned he hasn't been perfect.. no coach ever was or will be perfect.. obviously..

what does bowles, in your eyes need to do not to get fired after next season?? for me, if maccagnan goes on his second spending spree in FA, it's playoffs or bust for both of them.. especially if maccagnan brings in a bunch of older guys like he did in '15..

personally, if i were woody's brother, i wouldn't let them try to keep their jobs by flooding the roster with win now or bust 28-30+ year old guys.. hell, with bowles' track record with veterans, that may be the last thing maccagnan needs to do..
