I've maintained my opinion from the start of this season, that a lot of these college QBs were overhyped at the start of the year. Darnold was hailed as the next coming of Montana after only what 6 games last year? You don't really know until the season plays out. Darnold has talent, but in my opinion, he's not ready for the NFL. He will be overwhelmed by NFL defenses and the speed of the game. His delivery is too slow and his velocity is average. That extra half of a second in the NFL is the difference between a pick and a completion. He needs more time to develop. Mayfield, well, my opinion on him is well documented at this point. Rosen will be gone before the Jets pick, and he has some questions to answer about his commitment to the game.
In short, I'm not sold on any of these "first round" QBs. The Jets can't afford to miss on a first round QB draft pick. Or any first round pick for that matter. There may be a QB that can become a great starter in later rounds. This is a deep QB class. There are no Mannings or Lucks in this class, but it is a deep class. The Jets would be wise to continue to follow their BPA philosophy. If that's a QB fine, draft him. If not, this team could use upgrades at several positions and they can get a really good player with a top 10 pick. So they should focus on continuing to add good players and not reach for a QB if they are not 100% sold.
