What If The 4 QB's Are Gone When The Jets Pick?

Who would we take? Unable to know which non QB would be taken. A trade down is possible but if we have no takers and are stuck at #6, where do we go? Edge Rusher, CB, OL, RB??

then the choice will be ER Arden Key from LSU, or RB Saquon Barkley from PSU... the other option would be trade down and stock pile some picks...

Even if Mayfield and Allen are there. we may be better off picking from:

OT Connor Williams Texas
OT Mike Mcglinchey (spelling?) ND
OT Quenton Nelson ND
OT Orlando Brown OK

Certainly if the QBs are gone, we should absolutely pick an OT from this group with our sixth pick. We need OL more than anything on defense.

Nelson is OG... and is the top offensive line prospect in this draft

Mike McGlinchey and Orlando Brown Jr. are the best blind side tackles but neither are will be taken in the Top 15...

Connor Williams is maybe pushing back end of first round...

But as the topic suggests and if the team sticks with BPA either or Key/Barkley one of them will be there being they are both Top 5 prospects... Leonard Williams all over again...

I'm OK with this. I"m not big on these top 5 QBs anyway. Let's help the "O" line with our first pick and grab a QB in round 2 or 3.

MY TOP 5

1. Mayfield (I know, I'm in the minority)
2. Rosen
3. Allen
4. Darnold
5. Jackson
6. Rudolph

I'm taking the top QB on my board who slides to 6, period.

Its a QB league, without one you are the Washington Generals and the teams with FQB's are the Harlem Globetrotters.

If I have to reach for a QB at #6, so be it, I'm reaching.

I saw texas on a tv 2 or 3 times and was not impressed by Williams - not a top ten pick in my view

Under this scenario I'd take BPA not named Minkah Fitzpatrick (because we are already set at S), and then grab QB Stidham in round 2. No sense in reaching at 6, as we've been down that road before with Sanchez...

Actually, if Stidham declares for the draft, he would be my pick. He isn't perfect but he's pretty darn good and no excess baggage that I've heard of. I believe that he is heads and tails above Petty and Hackenberg but then in all fairness he hasn't had any NFL experience either so we don't know how he will function with the big boys so to speak.

It would be interesting if four QBs had already gone because there is no consensus as to which is best. If we took a fifth, we would be saying that the other four teams didn't know what they were doing. Perhaps we should be grateful that the Jets aren't #1 because you KNOW we would pick the wrong guy, and then sit him for a couple of years behind 'veteran' QBs. If the guy isn't ready to start the Jets are hopeless at developing talent. Barkley would be stuffed in the backfield unless we fix our O-line, with a better line you would see more from McGuire.

To answer the OP, if four have gone I would trade down, take our developmental QB then, and use the other picks on O-line, but we say 'trade down' every year and the Jets always stay in their assigned slot.

If they don't trade up, pick the best player available (maybe even a stud offensive lineman) and pick QB Mason Rudolph of Oklahoma State in round 2. I've read on several scouting reports that he is the most "NFL ready" quarterback in the draft, and has been flying under the radar because of all the publicity over his cross state rival Mayfield. But the latest Athlon Sports mock has Rudolph the #1 pick in the entire draft.

A few thoughts...
  • I think there's a good chance Cousins signs with one of the teams looking for a QB in the early draft, including the Jets. If he signs with the Broncos that may allow one of the top four QB's to fall to us. I also think Mac will not go into the draft without having a potential starting QB (not McCown) on the roster. Bridgewater, Bradford or Alex Smith fits that bill. This way he can either sign one of the big four if they fall to us or take a second tier guy in round two.
  • I think Mac will sign a good/very good WR in free agency. I would love to see Richardson, but there are other potential targets as well. Given all of the young guys Mac has drafted/signed it's unlikely he would want to spend a high pick on another receiver.
  • Completely agree about getting a starting center. A guy to keep an eye on is Frank Ragnow from Arkansas. He was the best center in the country until he was injured. He's a guy who could easily fall to the middle rounds, provided of course, he has recovered.
  • I'm not a big Winters fan and think we can improve that spot. Also wondering if Mac will invest big in a guy like Nate Solder. Mac must draft two OL in this draft. If he does I wouldn't mind an OL of Solder, Billy Price, a new center, Carpenter, and Shell. That would be a HUGE improvement.
  • I like RB Isiah Crowell from the Browns. He won't be too expensive and I love his speed.

Either one of these guys would be my first pick, if I were doing the picking. We seriously need a good edge rusher and Arden key is about the best I've seen in a long time and Saquon Barkley teamed up with McGuire and Powell would allow us to have a powerful running game. I would try to get a GOOD QB in free agency and draft another in the second round, Rudolph or Stidham if he declares for the draft. Then we still need a good left tackle and center and they are available all through the draft. Just my two cents, even though I believe that one of those top 5 rated QBs will still be there when we pick at #6.

I wish that we didn't need a QB (been 49 yrs since we had a good one) because there are some good options other then QB's.
Alex Smith has been rumored to be a good fit for the Jets (I'm not a fan of him). My understanding is he is still under contract and we would have to give up a pick for him.
Some have talked about OG Nelson being taken at 6. There were a few wise posters in the past who have said, "you don't take a guard in the top 20 in a Draft.". Nelson may be special.. There are a few very talented players still available. My option if the QB's the Jets wanted are gone. Hopefully make a trade with Buffalo for their two number 1's and a 2 and 5. Am I asking for too much? Trading from 22 to 6 should get us a good return. The Bill's do need a QB too.
