Jets may need to trade up with Indy or Clev for Mayfield

Looks like the Cardinals are in the great QB handicap as well. Presumably too far for them to trade up for the 'golden four', so Cousins must be a candidate. Now if you were Cousins, would you rather go to the Jets or a playoff contender? Mmmm.....

A lot of what happens with Cousins depends on what the skins do - assuming they don't franchise him, I would think they'd have to transition him. If they do, and Cousins really wants out of DC, he probably can't take less for a better situation - the skins could just match it.

Sorry, I should have saved the tweet, but I saw a tweet from a sportswriter in Denver who said the Jets and Bronocs will both be hot for Mayfield.

Unfortunately they currently sit at 5 and we sit at 6, so if we don't move up to 3 or 4, we're out of luck.

The good news is, we have an early 2 to sacrifice because we still have a later 2 from Seattle.

I'm actually quite afraid he'll get cute. Remember 2016? Everyone and their brother knows Darron Lee was not the plan. The plan was to take an OL. Instead he got cheap and we ended up with Lee (what seems to be a distant 2nd choice, but BPA), Hackenberg, and Burris. All of those players are brutally bad picks.

So in this case I just hope Mac has learned not to f*ck around? This business is often about making the bold move. If he has a guy in mind that he truly believes in, go get him! Don't lollygag or screw the team out of badly needed positional picks.............

the one thing you didn't write is he didn't NEED a scholarship since his parents a flush bank accounts... so he took a leap of faith and walk-on to a program that his parents flipped the bill... he may be a true competitor but he is also a reckless one off the field because he has mommy and daddy's wallet protecting him...

this is the comparison to Manziel they speak of, both party off the field without regard to the law knowing that their parents with money will bail them out...

He also failed to mention that Texas Tech did not offer him any scholarship after that first season due to his father being a Douche and fighting with the coaching staff. Daddy won't be there to bail him out at the next level and sadly, Baker has not matured enough to take the responsibility necessary .
He has the talent and drive, but you can't coach maturity and sadly his parents have held him back in that area.

I will be happy with any of the Darnold, Rosen or Mayfield trio. I love Darnold's game minus the turnovers. He makes throws few can make and played with a terrible offensive line this year. Rosen is probably the best pure passer with a concern about the two concussions already. Mayfield is accurate and has moxey. Not concerned about his height but about his explosive personality in New York city.

I'm not a fan of Josh Allen because he's just not accurate and that's something you either have or don't. Also, don't want to go through the trails and tribulations of Lamar Jackson and waiting for him to eventually get hurt like RGIII. I do like Mason Rudolph but do not think he will be picked that early and will also be gone by round two (Buffalo, Arizona, LAC). I also don't want a Cousins unless his price comes down drastically which I don't foresee and do not want Alex Smith who is good but will be 34 next season and we have to give up probably a decent draft pick.

I do think however to get one of the aforementioned trio you might have to trade in front of Denver to be sure unless they sign Cousins or trade for Smith. I'm happy to keep taking chances on a young guy because I want sustained success and the only way to do that is with a impact QB.

BTW - it will be interesting to see who shows up and shines or bombs at the combine.

Denver seems to be more than just interested in Mayfield. They have requested to have him put on their roster for the senior bowl. I'm guessing that they want to get to find out more about his personality then physical skill.

I read that too. What better way to observe him. It would seem that he is likely not going to get to number six, unless of course Denver decides that he isn't worth the pick. If that should happen it would be a good reason for us to consider passing on him too.

It's a definite advantage for Denver. Kind of takes us out of the running for him. If Dever feels his off field concerns are nothing to worry about, they will draft him, if they pass, that should tell is everything.

Yup ! That is how I'd appraise the situation.

You know I was high on going with a FA QB in lieu of the draft before, but I'm more convinced now that is the path we should take. Cousins or Bridgewater , Hack and a QB like Lock later in the draft makes the most sense. The 4 the best QB in a over rated class isn't going to do much. I'm pretty firm that if we can land a FA QB who can give us 5 -8 years or more, we see if Barkley falls to 6 and take him, if he's gone trade back and draft Price. Center is our biggest need on the O line ,and use the 2 seconds and extra picks to add a guard and some playmakers for whomever the QB is in 18 or 19. We have to give that QB protection and weapons to succeed.

I agree. I'd love to see them pick Barkley and if he's gone take Keys. I am probably among the minority not totally impressed with the top 4 college QBs. I'll hate myself if one of them becomes a superstar and kicks our butts but I just don't see them in the same light as some of our friends on this forum. I don't think any of them will wind up being the starter, at least not this next season. I'd settle for a QB in a later round to develop behind a vet starter and the Jets can afford, with our huge cap space, to get a good one. I'd be happy with either of the two you mentioned and solidify the "O" line around them from the draft and free agency.

I think the Jets are signing Cousins. If that occurs, they will stay at 6.

I agree Mac will sign his starting QB in free agency. It may be Cousins or it may be Smith or Bridgewater. Smith or Bridgewater may save enough to also sign a guy like Nate Solder. Add a CB like Gaines and Mac goes into the draft with no need to reach. If the football gods then bequeath the Jets Saquon at #6 how excited would this fan base be? Very.

its plausible.

We'll there will be no way to know what Denver thinks until it's their pick. The Jets will have to make their own assessment on Mayfield and will have just as good an opportunity to validate whether he has the goods. If they deem he's the guy than trade up and not take the chance that Denver picks him right in front of you. Would hate to lose a franchise QB for the sake of what ever picks we have to give up. Franchise QB's are worth an entire draft's worth of picks. Assuming you get it right!

No reason to kick yourself if one or two of them turned out great. The reality is, they are not available to us. Cleveland will take Rosen or Darnold , the Giant likely take the other. If they don't, they usually wondering deal with the Jets so will trade to someone else. We would have to trade up for the 3rd best option ,but doing so seriously hurts the rebuild and puts upgrade to the O line out of reach.
The must trade up to the first pick crowd is way over rating this year's class.

You are correct that the Jets will have the same opportunity to evaluate him by watching the game as well. But, getting it right is always an assumption when it comes to the draft and assumptions are always a gamble. We thought we had it right with Mark Sanchez but he's on his 5th team now and is only their #3 guy. I. myself, would be choosey how I gamble away draft picks.
