Dyer: Jets shouldn't draft quarterback

Metro -- As much as the New York Jets might want to find a franchise quarterback in an NFL draft filled with plenty of promising signal callers, this offseason might be one where the team finds their solution under center in free agency, not with a draft pick.

This isn’t because of where the Jets pick, after all, their 5-11 record was good enough — or rather bad enough — to land them the sixth pick. A top quarterback will still be there, even if the Jets choose to trade back should they miss out on the presumed top three of Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen or Josh Allen. But it has more to do with where this team is at right now and the state of the organization’s leadership over the past three years.

This is the Jets second rebuild in what will be a fourth season under the duo of general manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles. They began this past season presumably on the hot seat, not shocking given 2016’s fall from grace. If they have another year like the past two, they won’t be getting to a fifth season with the Jets.

That means that a rookie starting quarterback is too great a gamble, a decision that in all likelihood would mean the rebuild could take a collective step sideways and not forward. That kind of season would cost Maccagnan and Bowles their jobs.

I have to disagree with that in part. I think that if they can get a good QB in free agency they should, but, I believe that they should also draft a QB, even if not one of the top three, to develop in the wings. I'm pretty convinced that Petty is not our guy and that he should be released. I have mixed feelings on Hackenberg. So, assuming we do get a good QB from the free agency market, we still need to be developing a QB behind our current starter whoever that may be.

Retreads are retreads for a reason, because their former teams decided they either stink or can only take you so far.

I know there were outliers (Jim Plunkett or Kurt Warner for example), but you don't build your organization based on the occasional fluke.

In this league you have to find your FQB in the draft, then hang-on to him like the Hope Diamond.

Psst - Hall of Famers George Blanda and Johnny Unitas were cut by the teams that originally drafted them, too. Cream rises to the top, sometimes slowly.

Anyone who writes an article with Josh Allen being considered a top three QB hasn't watched college football this year.

I keep trying to tell everyone, this is it for Mac. He must take a QB. I see no possible way this position can be "put off" yet again? He's tried twice now and both times it yielded garbage. If the Jets are going to rebuild on a normal schedule/timeframe they must get a QB now. Mac only got an extension because ownership believes he's on the right track to building this team into a contender. That only comes when you get a QB.

First of all, Mac WILL either sign a QB via FA or take one through the draft. That is virtually guaranteed. Second of all, if that QB does not work out or ends up being another Bryce Petty? Mac is GONE...........

! agree with Mainejet. QB either FA or Draft is a must or Mac is gone. If we take a FA QB we will open the door to 2 very big needs. Either another Curtis Martin in Barkley or an ER in Chubbs or Key. Granted OL is a need, but I feel if RB or ER would be a big plus. If we take an ER at 6th we still have a good chance to pick a very good RB in the 2nd.

Bortles and Keenum beat Big Ben and Brees. QB is obviously not that important.
With all due respect, thats short-sighted and missing the point.

Having a FQB doesn't guarantee you will win the SB every year, or ever win it, it just means that unless the rest of your team is awful, they give you a real chance to win it every year.

IOW's having a FQB is the biggest difference between CONSISTENTLY being a SB contender, and wishing for an occasional fluke year and red carpet ride.

It was sorta tongue and cheek, but I believe we should draft a QB. There might only be two or three prospects in this class that can be a FQB and possibly not anyone of the top 3. I would argue that you have to have a good to great OL. Romo had his best years after the Cowboys picked Frederick and Martin. Dak had a great year one when Zeke, but more importantly the OL was great. This year he struggled with Zeke gone, but mainly because Tyron Smith was hurt all year. Mark Sanchez had two years in which the Jets won because of the OL and he had very little to do with it. I agree we need a franchise QB, but I also know you have to hit on the right one. The top 4 QB's this year are Rosen, Darnold, Allen and OU child and every one of them has major flaws or issues. I believe the Jets must draft a QB this year not because the class is so great, but because the Jets have no QB's on the roster worth a fuck. However if a better impact player is there at #6 especially on the OL then take the OL or RB or edge rusher.
