Report: Austin Seferian-Jenkins turned down 2 year, $8 million offer from the Jets

Calvin Watkins reports the Jets have had talks with free agent to be tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins about a new contract. Their offer was rejected.

One of the Jets’ free agents, tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, has had contract talks with the team, a source said. The Jets offered him a two-year, $8-million deal and were rejected, but they will continue talks with his representatives. Seferian-Jenkins had career highs in receptions (50) and yards (357) and had three touchdown catches.​

I think this might be a case where the discipline of the front office is tested. Seferian-Jenkins has value for the team on the right contract. A deal with a $4 million annual value is right at the upper limits of what I would call an acceptable contract. If we get into more money, we are talking definite overpay range.

This isn’t really a player who is a difference-maker. Sometimes you’d like to keep a player, but the player simply commands more money than it would be prudent to pay.

the annual pay is on the money I was thinking more of a 3 year $10 M then could always add incentives based on production, shit even would guarantee the whole 10... But anything more is pointless for a pass catcher that is iffy when it is time to catch touchdowns...

Maccagnans next offer should be 2 years 7 million, then 2 years 6 million........
ASJ camp is thinking that is our offer if no one else beats it in FA.We can always fall back and take it.
When the Jets window for exclusive contract talks closes,so should the offer. take it off the table.

no offense to ASJ, but Eric Tomlinson is just as productive and a better blocker... Then Neal Sterling more of a wide receiver in a tight end body... What to expect from Jordan Leggett, they may just call it a day and move on... If anything maybe they draft someone in the mid rounds... But offering this clown anymore money or adding years is straight ridiculous...

I think the offer was fair, but I did say earlier it would probably take about$7 million to keep ASJ. He has done absolutely nothing to earn that kind of money.
It's a nice story about him getting sober, but we aren't paying him not to drink......
I'd say keep Tomlinson , Leggette and sign a TE. Let ASJ go underperform elsewhere and sympathize when he reverts to his old ways.

if we sign anyone would love to get Troy Niklas, same age as Seferian Jenkins but has bigger upside for our run game and is a better pass protector when needed to stay in to block... Like Tomlinson, Niklas is an underrated pass receiver...

yea but I am not seeking to get him on a multi year deal if anything same deal as we offered to ASJ would suffice (any guarantees would be in yr 1, and nothing in yr 2) basically making it a one year deal with an option for us to keep him thereafter or part ways...

This would be OK in a pinch if we can't make a reasonable deal with ASJ but I'd really like to see someone good in that role long term. Maybe we will find one in FA or the draft with comparable or better skill. Hope, Hope, Hope.
