Matt Forte doesn't want his time in New York to come to an end in 2018.

The 32-year-old running back wants to stay with the Jets next season because he has some unfinished business. Forte finished 2017 on the IR in a season that saw his career lows in carries (103) and yards (381).

If Forte is to retire, he wants it to be on a good note.

"I feel good now I haven't done it in like six weeks," Forte told Newsday's Calvin Watkins. "I got some personal goals that are real obtainable taht I can reach. But I don't want to finish my career out being on IR at the end of the year. I want to be impactful and help our team get to the playoffs and go out on top."

Forte may want to return to Gang Green, but it won't be his call to make. With Bilal Powell on the roster and the emergence of Elijah McGuire, Forte could be the odd man out. GM Mike Maccagnan also is projected to have about $100 million to spend this offseason, and it could very well go to a free-agent back.

And Forte recognizes he isn't the hottest commodity with his injury history and age. That is why he would understand if the Jets decided to release him and save $3 million in the process.

"I have no idea what's in the cards, only God knows," he said. "I'm a realist. I'm 32 years old, I'm a running back and had a couple of injuries last year. If I'm under contract with them and if they want to keep me, they will. If not, I'll try to get on with another team."

Forte will enter his 11th year in the league in 2018, and he'll be searching for 10,000 total rushing yards. He currently sits at 9,796 yards.

I have always liked the guy but between his age, injuries, and low production I'm guessing he will be making the Jets $3 Million better off.

He was good with the Bears, but age is catching up to Forte. Money spent elsewhere is where we need to go.

LOLz i'm sure forte does want to return to the jets.. HC caters to him.. if on the team next season, he would probably be the week one starter.. one more season of NFL checks..

that said, his "personal goals" notwithstanding isn't a good enough reason to keep him in my book..

He's a class act and if he signs for little, why not? He can still contribute, I just don't want to see him as the featured back.

I could careless if he is a class act. This is not about players who are class acts. We are here to improve the team.
