What's Next?

As long as Wesley Johnson is on the field, the OL will be terrible. He is not an NFL caliber player and the play of everyone around him suffers. I believe Shell will be solid at RT. Winters is overpaid and adequate at best. Hopefully his play will pick up now that he's presumably healthy and Long is at center. Carpenter and Beachum as adequate but both must be replaced in 2019. Ideally, Mac can get a C/G in rounds 3 or 4 who can backup at center this year and step in at guard next year to replace Carpenter. The only long term hope for LT is 2019 free agency or 2019 draft.

Next year there should be a heavy emphasis on finding a pass rusher and starting to re-tool the o-line. For sure.

I don't think Johnson will be back. I have not heard anything about resigning him.But nothing really surprises me with Mac.

The point being debated was that the line was “paper thin”. Which I think has been proven untrue. Depth isn’t the problem, as Qvale, Dozier, and Ijalana can fill in if an injury occurs.

Whereas I think most people would agree that the starters are average at best.

I would characterize our o-line as average, with decent depth. We can get by with what we've got, assuming Long is better than Wesley Johnson, and Carpenter/Winters have bounce back years. I mentioned it in another thread, but i was reading that the team is high on Dakota Dozier eventually becoming a starter.

This is pretty well where I am. The line is deep, in that it has a lot of guys who are serviceable. But it doesn't have many stand-out guys as starters, including Long. I'd add him to the decent group. Winters, for all the abuse he gets, may be the best lineman this team has.

Isn't that what I just said? I just tried to say it in a "being funny "way. We don't have a player on the starting line that would break anybody heres heart if he were replaced and that's not really a good thing

You implied that we didn’t have a good line, and then that we didn’t have a “real line”. I just thought that was a slight exaggeration. That’s all.

Jets OL looks good against lesser teams and vulnerable against good teams - bottom line is it's not good enough. Long doesn't solve that issue. I hope they're right on Shell - I don't see it, but what do I know.

The Jets are going to have to upgrade the o-line next offseason. The draft this year probably won’t have any immediate answers, and FA is down to mostly backups.

Nice pickup in Pryor. I would love to add EJ Gaines and let Skrine go. Mac continuing to make solid moves. I suspect there will be additional pickups after June 1. Let's hope it's on the OL.

Mac continues to plug holes for the 2018 team. Clearly, he had a blueprint and he's following it. However, in order to truly follow through on the plan that would lead us to the promised land, Mac must simply slam this draft, and not only at #3. Take a closer look at the free agents Mac has signed;

Trumaine Johnson - 3rd round
Isaiah Crowell - UDFA
Avery Williamson - 5th round
Spencer Long - 3rd round
Josh McCown - 3rd round

We can't continue to find mediocrity, at best, in the middle and even later rounds. It's that simple. We won't have $100mm in cap space every year. Mac must find bonafide starters for 2019 to take the next step. The most likely emphasis will be on the O-line.

Oh yeah, there's that minor issue of picking the right QB at #3.

This overhaul will not be complete or effective unless Mac scores big third round and later.
