Update: Jets rescind offer to DT Suh, Kong signs with Rams

I just don't get the reaction to this potential signing. Mac has created a solid defense, most of whom will be in place for several years. What he knows is missing is pressure on the QB and he knows he can't sign another 25-28 year old for 3-4 years in 2018. Nor will he likely get it in this draft. So why not sign a guy who can still play and affect offensive game plans? Suh will not be part of the long term plan but he can help us get there. He can make Leo a much better player. He can make the linebackers much more effective. I would find this defense fun to watch.

I agree, this would be a fun Defense to watch next year. With Suh commanding double and maybe triple teams, will finally unleash Williams to his All World potential.

Cant emphasize enough how great Mac and Todd Bowles have tightly sealed everything at Florham. Whether he signs Suh or not, this is another one of those in which the media had no idea the Jets brass were interested in this particular free agent.

Not trying to merge threads but, the more yyou hear about the Jets gaga over Rosen and Aleen, the more its obvious that Baker will be the pick.

Not much of a Baker fan, but whoever the Jets choose as there next QB, I'll be all in for.

I can name a team with a qb that needs to be knocked down a few times and we play them twice a year. And I know Suh likes to get after that qb too

Oh yeah, and that qb just lost his blindside protector, Nate Solder, to the Giants

In the 'Phins win against the Pats last year, Suh had 3 tackles, 1 sack, 1 pass defended and 2 QB hits. Not overwhelming but every hit against Brady helps. They also held NE to 25 rushing yards.

If Suh is double teamed and Leo is double teamed, and with cover corners like Trumaine and Claiborne, Bowles will blitz from every angle.

Also, before we write off Suh as a "WASTE" of a signing, lets consider a couple of things here:

1- Lets wait on what kind of offer we're actually giving him because so far, every free agent signing Mac has inked this off-season contractually has been a home run.

2-We have AMPLE cap space, this year and next. This could be a 1 year deal; Show me that your still interested in being that dominant interior linemen in '18 as we have over $118mil in cap space for '19 in which we can keep you long term.

3- Remeber a guy named Kris Jenkins?? If he was healthy during Rex regimes, IMHO we would have been the top defense bar-none. Let that sink in.

4-If he acts up, the Jets would cut him. With their cap situation, they are the few teams that can live with dead money on the roster.

I see no flaws with this potential signing.

I don’t think Suh’s taking any 1 year “prove it” deals. He’s going to be looking for a 3-4 year deal for his last big payday, IMO.

You don’t see ANY flaws to this signing? Really? Suh fever is really catching fire around here. He could end up being a decent signing, but I’m almost 100% sure the production will not match the salary. He’s 31 with 8 years of grind on that body. These deals for these types of players almost always end up disappointing.

I truly doubt Mac will sign Suh to a long-term deal. He's been extremely pragmatic in his approach. The only guy he signed to a long-term commitment was Trumaine Johnson whom he gave a 3-4 deal to. TJ is only 28 and he is in the prime of his career. If he gives Suh more than a year plus a team option for a second year then you're right, and we shouldn't be signing him. I think virtually everyone on this site agrees with that.

Johnson 5 yrs, Long 4 yrs, Williamson 3 yrs, Crowell 3 yrs. Another thing to consider when trying to guess if he will choose money or win potential would be the fact that he considers himself an elite businessman. He has business interest off the field as well as on the field and believes himself to be a good decision maker when it comes to business transactions. It has also been mentioned on line in a couple of places that even though the Jets were late in showing interest they offered him by far the most money and even discussed with him how they intend to use him. He is expected to make his decision known in the next couple of days.

JetGreen - I'm not sure what narrative you are referring to exactly. If you mean my belief that the team is committed to finding high character players, yes I believe that is true. Suh doesn't exactly fit that mold on the field. He's obviously talented, but inconsistent. I'd be curious to see how he's played against Buffalo and the Pats historically. Has he been man-handled or played well. To me, that's the only logic to signing him. Otherwise, I don't understand it, even to a very cap friendly deal.

And every one of those contracts can be terminated with minimal dead money after one year except Johnson's.

I guess. Maybe it would make sense in that circumstance.

It just seems like it's a deviation from the long-term strategy Mac has done well to impose.

Jets acting owner Christopher Johnson says team has rescinded offer to N. Suh. Looks like that’s over. Suh knew the Jets had the most money and used them for leverage to get other teams to up their offers.

Yup. He’s a dirtbag.

I am glad he won't be a Jet. I'm not opposed to other DL help, but not when it goes against what this entire offseason has been about.

+1

You have to accept the entire package with a player like this. Good player, asking for a fortune, best days behind him, no guarantees he doesn’t go postal on the field.

I know some of you wanted him and I understand completely but as you probably surmised from my earlier post I am not terribly disappointed. His talent wasn't enough for me to get excited about him after watching his less than sportsmanlike conduct over the years. Admittedly a player of his size and strength would be a real compliment to our defensive line. Hopefully we will find that guy soon but in the meantime I won't have to worry that a player on my team might trample the QB instead of just walking away after making the tackle which would, like it or not, wind up being a reflection on the whole team.

Dolphins dumped him because he wasn't worth the hassle or the cap hit. If he was playing at a high level and a good citizen he would still be a Dolphin.
