This is the first draft that all hands on deck approach was used... Some may get a little overwhelmed in that statement saying what the hell has he been doing since taking this job but in reality when he got here the team was built for success and any good G.M. would roll the dice and try to continue the success from the previous year... The notion of a successful failure of a season is exactly what happened... With a winning record, but missing the playoffs Maccagnan did what any other G.M. in his position would do, and tried to fill the holes to continue what his first season was and this time try to make the playoffs, boy complete disaster which led to the ultimate decision it is time overhaul this roster from top to bottom... To this point he has done just that only less than a handful of players are left from the old regime and even tho the potential is there, there is plenty more to do...
Right now thee roster on defense has lots of potential after opening the wallet to sign a true leader and no. 1 corner, consider last season Claiborne played well, didn't stay healthy for the entire season but bringing in Trumaine Johnson will allow the secondary take the next step along with the sophomore safeties to be more aggressive... Last year we got plenty from the linebacker positions, and chose not to over pay for a career year in Davis, then going out into free agency and signing one of the premier run stopping - coverage inside linebackers available to help Darron Lee do his thing better moving forward...
Curious decisions now are from what was the strengths of this defense for many years now, looks like the handicap but is it really? Still a long ways before we should start complaining... So what is he thinking? Plenty of options in free agency and one everyone seems enamored in signing Johnathan Hankins, there are others but we have time to make this signings happen, right now it is draft time...
Breaking down the interest at Quarterback in this year's draft... Sam Darnold looks to be in the driver seat to be this year's one overall but some debate on who the Browns truly like... There is some speculation that the Browns could go Josh Allen, while this could be true doesn't really help the Jets out as the Giants are said to be taking Saquon Barkley only if Sam Darnold is not there... So it comes down to the next two Quarterbacks on everyone's big board in Baker Mayfield and Josh Rosen....
The nitch:
Sam Darnold
Josh Allen
Baker Mayfiled
Josh Rosen
If you are G.M. Maccagnan who would be your sure fire guarantee, there is none but the most overall sound prospect is the one that doesn't meet the norm. in height requirement that the league is or has been used too... Do you go with the prototypical signal caller in Rosen who is the only one pro ready to start day one, the other two Allen and Darnold need one maybe two years to acclimate to this level and our current roster has a stable that can give either of those two the chance to evolve... Or do you go with the guy that has everything a New Yorker stands for, leave it on your sleeve mentality or is his brash attitude too much to bet the house on...
Look at the chances Maccagnan has done so far, everyone tells me that there is one way to go and its all or nothing... The Jets do like Sam Darnold because he has the highest ceiling but there is no way he is getting past No. 2 overall and we do not have any more assets to move up from 3 to 2... Darnold goes one then we have three to pick but Mayfield looks to be on the Jets big board as the clear cut favorite number two with all the separate visits that he had with G.M. Maccagnan, Todd Bowles, two meetings with O.C. Jeremy Bates, workout with Chad Pennington, meeting with interim owner Christopher Johnson, dinner with the coaching staff and GM, then another lunch with the interim owner not to mention meeting with the scouts and coaches at the combine, and sr. bowl... Team was at his pro day, watched then worked him and his favorite targets Dimitri Flowers and Mark Andrews shows the interest or intrigue they have in him...
This is the mindset of a G.M who doesn't care who thinks he is desperate, more so trying to find that guys to lead this team and current reclamation project (full rebuild) a guy with moxie, the attitude, leadership and New York Personality that will come in here and never lose that chip on his shoulder to prove he can be this team's savior... If the Jets don't take Mayfield this would go down as the biggest smoke screen ever in any NFL Draft in history... Have to look at it like this, Mike Maccagnan traded three twos to guarantee he can make this pick, now if it is Mayfield then Baker will need to prove he was worth it...

The nitch:
Sam Darnold
His intangibles, clutch gene and prowess at making plays off platform enable most NFL decision-makers to overlook his elongated throwing motion and propensity to fumble. Accurate on the move with good anticipation.
Josh Allen
Looks like Tarzan, is as accurate as Jane. Biggest upside. The prototypical size and rare arm talent will seduce many, but this is the definition of a project. Boom or bust. Whoever drafts him will ignore his 56.2 completion percentage.
Baker Mayfiled
More Drew Brees and Russell Wilson than Johnny Manziel, but he’s still a shade under 6-1. Accurate alpha dog with a forever chip on his shoulder. Inspirational leader with accuracy, mobility and moxie.
Josh Rosen
The most pro-ready of the bunch comes armed with baggage — durability (two concussions, shoulder) and his love for the game. Silky smooth throwing motion. Is he too smart for his own good? Too entitled? How much does he love football?
